Has any other team’s school imposed restrictions on travel such as, “No airplanes allowed for student trips”?? i know of at least 3 schools in our area that are thinking about doing this, just wondering what all the other schools were doing about this.
One of our teachers said that he didn’t want to fly to Florida and he didn’t like the idea of students flying to Florida. Then again this was a week after the attacks. I think it’s best to just give it time. People are afraid now and not thinking rationally. It’s still safer to fly than it is to drive anywhere. The chance of this happening again is low; why would you do the same attack twice if we’re already ready for it? That also brings the point that at least for us, the planes we’d fly to Florida are too small to be useful in these attacks (planes from Rochester to Florida are usually 727 or 737’s; not enough fuel to make it useful to smash into a building). And my last point is that if we refuse to fly because of these terrorist attacks then the terrorists have already won. If they succeed in making us afraid, then we’ve already lost as that’s what terrorism is all about. So overall I think people are just scared so give it some time and it’ll blow over.
Our team was thinking af chartering a filght down to Florida with a few other FIRST teams from NJ. In the end I think it is cheaper than buying every seat. Besides that you know everyone who is on the plane.
People have a tendancy to pick something up for awhile then drop it when it gets old, much like Christmas presents about a month later. I don’t wnat to think this but soon security will be right back to where it was before the attacks. I forget who it was but a cientist did an experiment where he changed certain smal things and it kept workers more efficient and interested in their work. Once security becomes “assembly line” people will lose interest and not do as good of a job as they should. I don’t like to be pessimistic so I hope I will be proven wrong by airport security workers.
The team I currently work with doesn’t allow the students to go swimming onschool trips because of previous drowning incidents. Flight restrictions may come.
You must consider that the dates for events will be out this week. In the past, it was imperitive to reserve your group plane tickets at that time if you were in New England. But nothing stops your school board from restricting plane travel a month after you put out the money for them.
Let us hope that this is all over with, not just for FIRST Teams, but for all those who love democracy. And Keep up the Spirit for America, do not let that DIE in 6 months. We were slapped in the head from the back. Like a coward shooting someone who was not looking. DO NOT forget that. (sorry for changing the theme of the post, but…)
