Under the Bumper versus Over the Bumper Intakes Argument!

Ok lets have a well documented argument of Under the Bumper Intake versus Over the Bumper Intake! Ready? Set? Lego!

over the bumper has more reach, it’s better.

Over the bumper allows to score in the Amp with the same device!

Under the bumper is simpler, it’s better

Can you describe in more detail “better”

Visibility from the driver’s station is poor at best over most of the field. This year, they are actually blind for a lot of it due to the stage things. Under bumper doesn’t help with that.

Under the bumper gets the protection of the bumper. Over the bumper has greater risk of damage.

Over the bumper can (though unlikely) draw G417’s (formerly G204)

Under the bumper protects from damage to your intake by another robot in many more cases, especially if you are going to the centerline during auto and want to play the game of “chicken”.

Can I say over the bumper AND under the bumper?

You have to choose one!

To play devils advocate, an over the bumper will get there 1foot before you (assuming same drive base speed)

I like this argument actually.

I say over the bumper would be faster cycles.

if you have over the bumper intake, you have more reach and will beat the other robot to the centerline and therefore won’t have contact

Depending on yours and your opponents auto paths. But if you go for a second piece from the centerline and another robot is also making their path there at roughly the same time then they would have the opportunity for contact. It would also depend on how fast each team has their robot moving during auto because if the over the bumper robot is slower then it would also be more likely to make contact.

You cannot knock it out of commission if it is under the bumper intake.

If you can not see what you are intaking how can you say under the bumper is faster?

I believe you would also have to consider the size of the robots as well and I’m unsure of the likeliness of two robots being the same speed with the same accuracy in many cases.

the point of an over the bumper intake in auto is that you will always beat your opponent if you’re “50/50ing” a game piece
