Using AMB Calculator for gearing calculator for climber, are there guidelines on how much cushion should we have?

We’re a little confused using the AMB calculator for our climbers. We have 2 climbers in a box, each with a Neo and a 3/4" spool. Main questions are what is a safe current draw and what is a safe stall load so that the motors don’t backdrive or slip at endgame. 12:1 appears to give 662 lbs stall load and less than 10 amps, which seems safe from a current draw but we’re not sure if that is true ( is that an average or a peak?). And we can’t seem to find anything on how to calculate the backdrive prevention. Are there any guidelines for this? Thanks.

Plugging in the numbers you gave looks decent. I got slightly different outputs so I’m guessing my inputs were different from yours.

1.36 volts at stall is in the range you want to be where you can hold the climb without burning the motor. 13 amps of current and 1.11 ft/s loaded speed is even a bit slow, you could probably lower the gear ratio and be a bit more aggressive there.

The current shown is what the motor will draw once it accelerates to 1.11 ft/s. There will be a higher peak as the motor is accelerating from standstill, but that will be over quick enough well before the breaker has time to trip.

As far as calculating backdrive, that’s a much harder effect to predict. It’s heavily dependent on the type of motor, gear ratio, and most importantly the amount of friction in your gearbox and climber system. That’s not really something you can calculate ahead of time, you’ll just have to build it and see.

Thank you. We were using 12 v, not the 10 v you recommended at end of match, and 3/4" diameter not radius, hence the difference, I think. We will proceed with our plan with a little more comfort.

If your diameter is 3/4" then the radius (what you enter into the calculator) should be 3/8". Unless you meant that you entered 3/4" radius because your spool diameter is 1.5"
