At this year’s Chicago Robotics Invitational, FTC team 8569 RoboKnights presented a workshop called “Don’t Guess, Guesstimate! Data Analysis & Game Simulator Software to Improve Your Design Strategy" on utilizing an online tool called Guesstimate for building quantitative models of the game. After a bit more research, there is a similar tool called Squiggle for those who are more programming-inclined. Have any FRC teams used either of these tools before, during kickoff activities? If so, I’d love to hear more about your experiences, whether you think it helps, and how exactly you utilized it/what for.
Could I see the models you made in Guesstimate? Also, is there a recording of this workshop?
Hello, thank you for showing interest in Guesstimate and for mentioning us! Although I am not able to give any insights on squiggle, here is an example of a guestimate model that we have used in the past. Guesstimate
Unfortunately, my team was not able to locate any recordings from either CRI or last year’s Championship, but, I am happy to answer any questions you all might have.

Thank you for responding!
So I went ahead and created an FRC-specific model for the Charged Up game. It’s not perfect but I think it’s relatively accurate. The first section is basically a table of inputs for modeling the rest of the game. Then each section of the game is labelled and possible scenarios listed. I recommend turning on “Expanded” and “Visible” under View to get a better understanding of how everything works. I believe you can also make a copy of the model and edit it to your own values if you’d like. Let me know if you have any questions!
We’re excited about this and I think we’re going to give it a shot at kickoff this year instead of our Excel-based time study.
Given this was our first year doing workshops, we focused more on presenting a solid in-person experience for those attending the workshops, so no recordings were done. We’re hoping to record the workshops in future years.
Do you guys have any presentations you used or something else to understand the tool?
I’m just one of the organizers of the Chicago Robotics Invitational (CRI), not involved with the team itself, so I’m not sure how helpful I’ll be in this. I don’t have any slides or recordings from the presentation, but @paryden might have more of an answer, or I can also forward this thread to the team contacts that I have too.
I’m guessing you already found it, but in case you haven’t, Guesstimate’s docs are here.
The Presentations I gave were more about overall strategy and do not have anything elaborating upon them inside the presentations but I would be happy to answers any questions you have.
