Vertical and/or Horizontal?

Can the links be only horizontally? Or can you link them both horizontally and vertically? I see it says the row is a series of 9 horizontally, however, does that mean you can only do it horizontally?

To my knowledge it has to be horizontal.

A link is defined as “3 adjacent NODES in a ROW” - a row would be horizontal
