Viability of the KOP Chassis Drop-Center while Balancing the Charge Station

Like hundreds of other teams this year, my team will be using the KOP Chassis (AM14U5) as the drive base for our robot. In most years, the drop center isn’t a factor that needs much consideration; however, with the very sensitive charge station, we worry that the rocking of the chassis, induced by moving back and forth in order to level the platform, will destabilize the platform worse.

With that in mind, I ask those with experience in this front (perhaps from 2012?) their opinions on the viability of using the default 6WD KOP chassis with a drop center or if it’s worth the delay/added complexity to switch to another type of wheel layout (and if so, what would be the best layouts?) that would have much less rocking during back-and-forth movement.

It’s viable.

The key is to set most of the weight on one side so it has a preferred “down” side and a preferred “up” side.

For evidence, I present 2012…

Option B, go to an 8WD drop-center.
