Are we allowed to use last years victor 883’s with the 884’s or do we have to only use 884’s
I believe that we may use the 883’s as well. The 884’s are just a newer version and nicer.
Team update 1 just changed this. Victor 883s are not allowed.
The 884’s are rerquired to be used with the 40 amp breakers supplied this year. the 883’s aren’t designed to handle that load.
I’m guess that the change is because the new drill motors need the full amperage, and 884s are need to actually supply them. I think the step to the 884 is more than just a cosmetic change.
So we cant use the 883’s at all, or just not on the 40amp breakers, they have been running fine on the 30 amp breakers for the last 4 years…
This means, for us anyway, that we will have to buy several Victor 884s to run our robot. Can we say, several hundred dollars?
The Victor 883s not being able to handle 40 amps should not be that big of a deal - after all, we have more motors in the kit than the drills. If we could use Victor 883s for smaller motors, we could pull them off old robots, which we need to do because we for one don’t have that much money.

Victors can handle nearly 70 amps continuous. We will never reach this kind of current in a FIRST bot. I think first is making a costly mistake.

I thought the only difference was that you could use the bottom 10% of the motors for more control. I remember because this seemed stupid since most of the motors require more than 10% power to operate.

You really believe that? The drill motors this year have a stall amperage draw around 90 amps (that’s from memory; someone correct me if I’m wrong). It will take several seconds for the 40 amp breaker to trip at that draw. So there’s a good chance of drawing over 70 amps at some point during a match. There’s probably a good chance of damaging the 883’s with that kind of current draw (I haven’t looked a the spec sheet lately however). Or maybe InnovationFIRST just needs more money.

yeah the victor will take the stall momentarily ~3 secs before you may cause permanent damage. at this point in first the breakers will have popped. the victors are severly underrated.

Stall current on the new drill motor is 129 amps. Victor 884s are rated at 40 amps continuous but I believe the peak is over 400 amps. The 884 has a dead band programmed in for approx values 117 to 137, with 127 considered to be dead stop.
If any of you are working from your own computer or the team computer, I highly recommend you download the pdf files on all components, game docs and team updates.
This does seem a bit ridiculous. I don’t know what the price is now, but a victor was $130 a piece last I checked. Most motors couldn’t pull enough amperage to damage the victors. Only the Van door, Drill, and Chiaphua motors have a stall current greater than 20 amps. Our team has to save every penny and this doesn’t help.

Current Victor 884 Price is $115. At least they didn’t raise the price!!!
I have a feeling that at least part of this decision was based on the fact that IFI has discontinued the 883 controller. Also, the 883 and 884 have a different minimum output voltage, which means if you were to build your robot using an 883 controller, and then have to switch to the 884 as a replacement down the road, your machine’s operation could be very different. While it may be somewhat costly, I have a feeling it’s just a way to make things easier all around…
When did they discontinue the 883? We purchased 4 883’s and 4 884’s about a month before the kickoff. If it means that we will not be able to use the 883’s, we are out $400!! I dont understand why they would not allow us to use them. If we can’t use them, they’re gonna make really expensive paperweights.:ahh:
You can sell them in a heartbeat on EBAY for Battlebots trust me start them out at 50 bucks ea and see where they go.
Can we use the victor 883 if we use the smaller motors, like the globe of fp or something, because four victor 884’s is just not enough, plus buying more is very costly for us being way up here in canada

With the release of the team update saying delete 883 from the document, I guess that the 883’s aren’t allowed.
well saying that i havent received an answer from first i guess well have to go with what is understood in the update, and that is a major downer which will mess us severly, well i guess that which does not kill us makes us work harder.
