Hello. I’m from Team 4079 based in Cypress, CA, and we were wondering if anyone had a spare NEO 550 in the Orange County or LA area. Unfortunately, we ran it with a 40A breaker instead of 20A (for our intake) and it burned out. If anyone is willing to sell a NEO 550 (willing to pay full price), we would happily buy it, new or used . It’s the last item for our cargo intake/shooter and overnight shipping would cost more than the motors themselves. We plan on buying extras but if we could get one from a local team we can resume testing and software on Monday.
Running a neo550 on a 40 amp breaker is just fine. If you burned up the motor it’s because you geared wrong or were extensively stalling it.
We stalled it because the spacing of our wheels was off (there was too much compression) but a 20A breaker would have saved the motor in that situation, as it drew over 20A when it stalled. We fixed the spacing of the motor so the neo 550 (the one that smoked) kind of works but it’s inconsistent because of the burnout. We need to start it going by hand + and it doesn’t consistently spin.
Sorry to post and not provide an answer to your original question. I don’t want to distract from what you’re asking, but so you don’t burn out the next one I want to point out that a 20A breaker would probably not have been able to save the motor. To prevent NEO550s from burning out I highly recommend setting a current limit on the Spark Max in code. Set it to something like 25A. You can look through this data to make a more specific choice if you want.
The reason that the 20A breaker would probably not have saved the motor is:
- The 20A breakers do not trip immediately and can take higher current for small amounts of time
- The current going through the breaker is not necessarily the same as the current going through the motor, which can be much higher. (if interested, more detailed explanation in this thread)
Just saw your request. We have NEO motor new in box that we are not currently using. REV-21-1650. Do you still need it? We are in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Thank you but we were able to get our hands on a neo 550. Thank you though!
