I saw that FIRST just announced FIRST Game Changers, which is sponsored by Star Wars, again this year. Now, while I know that FIRST hasn’t had a game sponsor until recently, but I was just wondering if you guys thought that Disney will now become a regular sponsor, or if it is just because this year’s game got cancelled and so they decided that it would be best to just do the sponsorship again this year.
No one knows except FIRST at the moment. In my opinion, I would think it was because they didn’t get the full run of their sponsorship in 2020. However, this is all speculation and no one knows for sure.
They wouldn’t be the first to repeat a major sponsorship. Qualcomm has been the presenting sponsor of the last four FTC games, and presenting sponsor of FIRST Championship for some number of years I’m too lazy to dig up.
Regardless of whether or not the game sponsorship for 2021 is a carryover from this year or not, Star Wars Force for Change/Disney working with the FIRST community in initiatives like this shows that they were probably more invested in the program outside of a monetary contribution.
Its very likely the video we saw, and for sure the general game theme, were both decided well before COVID was a thing, much before it looked like FIRST had to cancel. In general its quite confirmed the GDC works 2 years in advanced with 2 “groups” (so 2019 group started 2021 when 2019 season finished, and Jamee from the GDC talked about how her “group” are moving to the 2022 game on her talk on RSN)
This means that most of the stuff we have seen was quite locked in before COVID, I doubt FIRST would do such huge changes over halfway through the development cycle of a game (When its supposed to be at a quite ready stage).
Yeah, because I remember at least for the 2019 announcement that all 4 were announced during a broadcast at champs 2018.
