WebHosting Questions

Quick question.

I’m just wondering how people host there webpages. I’m actually looking for space for myself, since a sponser of our team is hosting us. (We are very appreciative about this)

I’m specificly looking for sites that allow Domain Hosting (transfers), FTP or FrontPage access, and around 10-15 megs. I know, a very demanding list. I’d also would like the ability to modifiy my MX record someway.

Thanks

Well many hosting services you have to get a domain name first. To do that goto http://www.internic.com and goto The Accredited Registrar Directory to find a place that will sell you a domain. I found that http://www.1stdomain.net/ has reasonable prices and good services, but I only looked at a couple registrars.

Then, once you buy a domain, you have to get hosting. There are many free places for this, but they usually don’t give you many useful tools. So, after longs hours of searching I found this incredible place, http://www.9kd.net/ep.shtml, where you can get hundreds of great options (like php, perl,a mysql server, unlimited sub-domains,unlimited email addresses, unlimitied storage) for only $15/year. It might even be too good to be true, I dont know I haven’t tried it yet.

Also, if you have your own hosting and want a domain name, you need to find out the Primary Nameserver, Primary Nameserver IP, Secondary Nameserver, and Secondary Nameserver IP of the host, which the domain name service requires. So for example the ones for 9kd.net can be found at the bottom of their page that describes what you get for $15/year page.

ChiefDelphi.com uses Interserver.net. You can get an idea of their speed/uptime by visiting ChiefDelphi.com

I’ve also used Jumpline.com. They have pretty decent plans as well.

If someone on your team has a good internet connection such as dsl or cable you could run your own webserver. Then goto a website like www.dns2go.com to get a shortcut to your web server.

I forgot to say that you need a web server program. I use the one off Windows 2k. You can probaly find a free one off the net. try looking at www.download.com

Use Apache if you’re going the personal webserver route. There’s even a mod_frontpage if you really want it.

However, I recommend that you get webhosting from people who dedicate servers to that one purpose. They’ll have better connections and bandwidth for webserving; in addition, you don’t have to worry about someone shutting off your computer or using it to play games, etc. grin

yeah that is true. I know from experance about people shutting your computer down when running survers off of it

I agree with Brandon about the use of Interserver as a host, they are great. As for hosting a web-site on your computer, it would be better to have it on a free host…

Well, after an exhausting search. Um, okay, maybe 10 minutes.

I’ve gone with http://www.aplushosting.com/

They seem pretty reliable, gave me all the options I wanted and more for 7 bucks a month.

Plus, how can you go wrong with a company that names all there servers and workstations after StarWars/StarTrek/Andromedia characters.

Thanks guys for the advice
