Week 4 Score Breakdown: Mighty & High

Week 4’s over, so it’s time for another score breakdown.

The Numbers
This week, the average match score was 230, about 17 points more than last week. Just like last week, 20% of that score was in Auto, and 76.8% in teleop. There is still an average of 7.7 foul points each match.

In playoff matches, 1.1% of the match score is dedicated to the 4-rotor bonus (+0.7%), with an average of 9.6 rotor bonus points per playoff match. kPa bonuses have gone down in playoff matches, from 0.1% to 0% (yes, 0%). Only 0.58 points per playoff match is dedicated to kPa pressure bonuses.

In Autonomous, Mobility accounted for 28.7% of the auto score (-2.2%). Rotors seem to be more popular in auto, making up 68.5% of the auto score (+2.6%). High Fuel has gone down, only making up 2.7% of the auto score (-0.4%). Low Fuel still sits at a measly 0.1%.

In Teleop, Rotors are less popular, accounting for 47.4% of the teleop score (-2.0), in favor of takeoff (climb) points, at 50.4% (+1.3%). High Fuel makes up 0.7% of the teleop score (-0.2%), and Low Fuel makes up 0%, just like last week.

This week, 97 games (1.1%) were decided by fuel, while 164 games (1.8%) were decided by fouls.

Red Cards seem less common, with adjustment points only accounting for 0.23 match points deducted per match (-0.2).

The Extras
These values are from the entire season, not just week 3

There have been 8 occurrences where an alliance has scored >=40kPa in autonomous, all but 1 of which were by the red alliance.

197 Alliance Seeds (4.8%) have been determined by kPa Bonus Ranking Points, and 310 (7.6%) determined by Rotor Bonus Ranking Points.

The highest combined score (red + blue) of the season so far belongs to Semis 1 Match 2 of the FIM District Lansing event, at 897 points.

The Opinions
Takeoff points are making a comeback, fuel is back to being almost ignored, and red cards are less common. Teams seem to be refining their strategies, which has resulted in an almost ‘saturation’ of match points, as you can see in events like Iowa, which had 6 matches in the Semis 2 series due to Tiebreakers.

Games are getting harder and harder to win, and not because the game itself getting harder. We seem to be reaching the ceiling of what most teams can achieve in this game. Unless a decent percentage of robots at champs can shoot fuel, I predict some very boring championship divisions, but a very exciting Einstein Field, moreso in the South Champs than in the North Champs.

This is some very interesting data. Could you compile it visually? It would be interesting to see some charts of the data from week to week.

I plan on doing that at the conclusion of the season, when I have the data for all of the weeks

Fantastic

Thanks for the analysis. I agree with your opinion about score saturation. The PCH Albany district also saw a Semifinal go to 6 matches with the added drama of a red card reversal. Thanks to the Refs, FTA, and HQ who took the time to get it right. The final went to 4 matches.

I expect week 5 to see many more 4-rotor bonuses in elims. Our alliance had a 50% 4-rotor rate, but would have had 6 of 7 if I had communicated better - which is something most alliances get better at as the weeks go on.

One match we were 1 gear away, and that gear was on the ground right in front of us (we each thought the other would get it). The other match we were 1 crank away from the 4th rotor, but better communication with my drive team would have given our pilots another couple of seconds.

It’s tough to do under defense, but man is it fun!
