Weekly Wins 04-01-2022

(Look, I don’t make the rules, I found a picture of a cat in glasses and a bow tie, I post that picture)

What do you want to celebrate this week? Anything cool? Bot work great? Or fall horribly and your pit crew pulled a miracle to make the next match?

My win is work related - as I was annoyed with our cloud based editor I finally figured out how to properly set up IntelliJ which has improved my quality of life quite a bit.

It was 80 degrees yesterday, I sat on my balcony for the first time in months. It was a really nice change of pace. Especially since it was snowing like 10 days ago… I also walked to Ayse’s house 12km away, which I have not done in a long time. This week has had some humungous frustrations, but the gorgeous weather is pretty nice.

This is a cool photo from my walk, as I was crossing on the Golden Horn Rotating Cable-stayed Metro/Pedestrian bridge (Seriously, this bridge is a ridiculously cool and beautiful piece of engineering).

I also got to go with Ayşe as she gave a short talk at the high school she graduated from (Darüşşafaka) for their 159th year anniversary. We got to catch up with her former mentor too

Not entirely sure this is a win, but the kids seem to be having fun. They’ve decided we need a better climber and a better shooter by next week’s regional. It’s now 2am and they’re still at it.

We came to our regional never having performed well in the team’s 6-year history and having comm issues half of our last regional (eliminated in semis).

Currently, in Idaho, we are number 2 after 2122 and got 78 individual points in our last match of the day

I survived the first - long, long - day of competition. Looking forward to Day 2.

We got inspected prior to practice matches at LAR. And got 5 matches in.
Vast improvement to OCR where we got inspected at 6pm and no practice.

Our robot fell off of high bar during a playoffs match last week at Great Northern Regional because another robot accidentally came in behind us and bumped us while we were swinging. We all thought the robot was toast and was going to be completely destroyed but as we took it off the field we realized the robot was perfectly fine and the only thing that had broke was a 3d printed camera mount that just bent a little that was for a camera we didn’t use once during the entire competition. After it fell we brought the robot back to the pit checked it over and were the first team back on the field despite our fall.

My son didn’t get blown away in the Arkansas tornado that destroyed their shop. The team robot was recovered. They just won EI at the Arkansas Regional.

Our robot caught fire at Arkansas. Cleaned it up, rewired, and played the rest of our matches afterwards and some good quarterfinals. I’d call that a win.

Won a blue banner at Lakeview. For me (not the rest of 2767 mentors obviously) this and the St. Joe banner are the most banners won by a team I’ve been a part of! I had previously been a part of three one banner years, so today was pretty cool despite having a very small part in the team’s success due to the whole being in college thing.

Also, one more week left of senior design, our project hasn’t blown up yet, and I will be done with undergrad in four weeks!!

We won our first Chairman’s Award at CVR! Everyone on 3512 is thrilled. :grinning:

It’s been quite the year for them. Hope we see them in Houston.

At the Smoky Mounrains Regional, my team won the Industrial Design Award (also won at the Greater Pittsburgh Regional this year) and I personally won Dean’s List Finalist, along with being Captain of Alliance 6 in the play-offs! It was a great competition!

We won the Chairman’s Award at the Israel DCMP and are going to champs for the second time in our 16-year history, I’d call that a win

That’s a million percent a win right there.

In one week’s time we played our second district event, ended as finalists, played our DCMP, qualified for worlds, and built, packed, and shipped our crate to Houston. Whoever called this “the hardest find you’ll ever have” wasn’t lying.

Shop cats rule.

We had a crazy good time at St. Louis, with a ton of educational and new experiences for the team all around. Super proud of what the students pulled off this year, especially given the time constraints and challenges we’ve faced in the past 18 months. I’d say it’s a miracle we’re here, but it’s a miracle due to the hours of hard work and sheer grit of the mentor and student body. It’s humbling to see what this group has grown into. I’m pumped to see what this group can do next season.

I also got to meet jdaming in person!

I was also within 2 feet of Koko_Ed, but didn’t get a chance to introduce myself. So this probably just sounds creepy now.

Feels good to have wheels on carpet again.

Minor Adulting Win: ironed some clothes for the first time with no significant unwanted creases, burns, or conflagrations.

And this is what I love about being a techie. Nobody seems to actually expect me to wear anything other than cargo shorts, socks and sandals, and hoodies I got from my employer. So literally anything other than that is a win.

At my new job, 70% of the staff work remotely. We have a lot of Zoom meetings including a weekly one with the CEO that all staff are invited to. I have never seen him wearing anything other than t-shirts. The company manual has a section “Dress code: We don’t have one. We don’t want one. Don’t make us have one”.
