Friday the 13th in October… it’s spooky day and I’m going to consider it a loss that TayTay scared the new Friday the 13th movie off of this release day. So I need some folks to tell me cool wins to off set that?
Also, fun fact, on this day in history - Nightmare Before Christmas was released.
My win - I had a huge list of things I learned for this sprint’s retro. Always a good sprint when I can learn new things. In an FRC related thing - making good progress on some work for estimating position based on april tags. So that’s been cool.
I’ll get the video posted soon, but progress has been made on our conversion to RC for our 2013 bot! This week we got it somewhat driving, forwards is great, but turns and backwards are not good. Also tested that each motor still works besides the not hooked up arm, and got the pneumatics line remade for the one piston on the robot, it still leaks, so some work is still needed. But its all coming along great! https://youtu.be/k6DjmyZWRBg?si=mLzVCnNT8MECxIy9
And for personal robot stuff, this is how the pressure cooker bot is looking like so far:
It looks more impressive under the shell, I just started on that version today.
Our 2023 co-driver and 2023/2024 CAD lead was selected as the Homecoming King.
Since I had was just working on writing the specifications for the next product I am supposed to design, I decided to spend the afternoon “working from home, but not at home” and worked at a friend’s restaurant and had a nice, leisurely lunch while typing. Later, he let me try some chicken wings he is fine tuning before putting them on his menu. They were some of the biggest and juiciest wings I ever had. They were double-fried so they were super crunchy.
Okay… so a win and a loss/win. The win is my coworkers knowledge of first aid triage and my trust in my coworkers has never been better. The loss/win is I cut myself with a glass scraper on my thumb and needed 8 stitches while out of state in a customers plant but it turned out okay in the end
My coworkers and I applied pressure, the wound seal (powder that clots the blood quickly, also stings… alot), then guaze, pressure and elevation
of the wound above your heart. The plants first aid kit was clearly marked and identified for us by several line workers as soon as they saw what happened. The closest ER was 10 minutes away and a coworker drove my car there. I was fixed up in about 2 hours and now have a splint to keep me from moving it too much while it heals. I have full motion still and will probably have a scar but all in all everything will be okay… so that’s a win.
Now I have a visible pointer for the importance of a properly stocked and accessible first aid kit. A cut like mine could happen just as easily from an exacto, or even an office paper cutter. Blades are blades so seriously consider that wound seal stuff as a standard Robotics kit first aid must have
WoundSeal Topical Powder Wound Care First Aid for Cuts, Scrapes and Abrasions Single Use, 4 count (Packaging May Vary) https://a.co/d/5Bracaz note: it’s not for major/large wounds, but a 1 inch cut like mine on one finger was fine. It’s not a massive amount of powder.
Just really really glad you have it when needed. Safety captains are the real MVP. I got to meet the plant safety manager and fill out fun paperwork when I got back. Including a doodle of the accident. Imagine a kindergarten hand turkey with a line across the thumb and a razor blade on a stick.
I bought my first house. I’m moving to within the Theodesian Walls soon. I will take a tram through the ancient walls every day, and a bus parallel to them to work. I’ve always been a huge admirer of the walls. I mean, today we have skyscrapers and giant buildings and stuff, and the walls are big, but we have a lot of big stuff, but Imagine what walking into this city in year 500 would have been like? “cities” where they existed maybe had like max 40-50.000 people, maybe one or two were bigger anywhere within 1000 miles of İstanbul. So there wouldn’t have been much of great size, you walk up to İstanbul, bam, 12 meter tall, double wall, with towers stretching for like 4 miles long from Marmara to Haliç. You’ve never seen a skyscraper, and you’re suddenly face to face with this monstrosity:
Then you cross it and you’re in a city of not 50.000 people, but a city of 500.000 people.
Anyways every time I pass through the walls it makes me think. They’re a pretty badass set of walls.
It will be nice to live near friends again, I have a bunch of friends in that neighborhood, and unfortunately all of my friends from where I used to live left the country or the city. So no more walking to work, but it will be nice to not be renting.
My landlords were crazy people who were fighting in the family and suddenly two different people demanded rent, so I left before I had somewhere to go to. While my parents were in town to help out I stayed in the hotel they stay in, and starting today I’ll be on my friends couch for about a month and a half while we renovate the apartments (I bought two small apartments to combine into one medium apartment, with a large terrace.
The last couple months have been insanely stressful, but finally there is a win amongst it. I own a home (well two that will become one).
Got our hastily built swerve bot ready for Minnesota Robotics Invitational this weekend. Just barely got the motorized intake on in time. It somehow scores more cycles/match than our comp bot…
Additionally we made it into the Iowa Regional.
Especially nice that our Regional Director has been working so hard to get new teams going in Iowa – this looks to be the first year with a majority of teams from Iowa in what used to essentially be the “Very Southern Minnesota Regional”
Recently completed my biennial first aid/CPR training. And I’ve signed up to be on first aid emergency response team for my school. Means I’ll be getting more “intensive” training through fire department soon. It’s not a pretty job, but someone (preferably everyone) needs to know how to do it. Glad you were in a place where people were trained!
My wins…
New drivers got a couple hours of practice on a full field (thank you 3309!) this week as we’re prepping for Tidal Tumble. Mubotics didn’t run us over while we where there… count that as a win as well.
4276 is not waitlisted for the first time in quite a while. Didn’t get top pick for 2nd event registration (LA), but we’re in at a good week 2 (Ventura).
And I figured out how to do the hypothetical statbotics events: Ventura without rookies (click "show teams with no matches)
I hear screw extractors only work if the hole was drilled with a left handed twist drill. Whoever worked on it before must have had their head screwed on with left hand threads.
During our Fall break this past week, we finally got our new Waterjet moved into our new dedicated area (removed an old paint booth) and most of it installed. Now it awaits water, power and air. The installers used 110V to check all functionality of several parts. All systems check. Next month the entire area will be enclosed with large doors in the front and rear (chain link fence removed).
