(It seemed appropriate given next Thursday in the states…)
Wins?
Had a good week at work and we got some decluttering done at home. Also it’s finally cooling down here.

not a win bit of a big loss.
My bro lost his dog last weekend, he was 15, had a heck of a good life. Please enjoy some puppy pictures from 2009/2010:
On the win side, good progress on the Pairwise rewrite, profs happy with the independent research, heard back from a job I applied for in Seattle.
All things considered, it’s been a really, really tough week. Got a bad midterm grade the same day I had to take another one. But, I made it through, and while I’m demotivated, the semester is not over yet. Still have some time to save things.
Onwards to next week, I guess…
Survived again so far
yup, idk
Regroup, chat with professors, build a plan. Best advice I ever got stuck rattling around in my head is that mistakes are fine as long as you don’t make the same ones twice.
You’ve been doing that a lot - hope everything is ok.
Learning “how to college” is quite difficult. No matter how many things people would say beforehand, some things you just have to learn yourself (although, someone should make an frcdesign.org for this). In the past few cycles of midterms (they should really call them throughout-terms at this point) I’ve been learning how to study more effectively and go to office hours, and the test I took today did feel a bit better than my last one. Forward progress is good, hopefully I can continue the trend.
Probably more difficult than the actual material in my courses is the balancing act of doing enough for everything at once. Still haven’t figured out how to get out and socialize while still getting all my work done in time, but it’s all things I’ll learn eventually.
Submitted my application to the University of California campuses a few hours ago!
Finished my last final and moved back home for winter break! Haven’t looked at any of the grades yet but I believe I did a good job with them.
Been taking a few days to relax after the stress of finals and slept like 12 hours one day lol.
Visited my old robotics team for a meeting to see how my little brother was fairing and it was nice to talk to everyone again, loved seeing how much the team has grown. Also get to see him compete in his first off-season tommorow.
Got to hang out with a friend for a bit today and met a very cute cat, it was nice to just be able to chill with people again.
Started up tryouts for my Splatoon team, learning to be a captain is fun but also very different lol.
Also recently discovered the joy that is webfishing, if you have a computer and 5 dollars and enjoy cozy games I definitely recommend it
One of my friends is doing a free art commission of me and I’m really excited to see how it turns out! Also I got a promotion at work. Also I got a bunch of Persona 3 Reload keychains for my bag.
A financial issue which has been going on for nearly 2 years was resolved - the check arrived yesterday.
Completed the current full card dex in the Pokemon Trading Card Game app. Gotta collect em all. I try to be a completionist when it comes to games I like with collectible items so currently mission accomplished til they release the next set (whenever that is)
Got some time to play Mario Party Jamboree and I’m really happy with the new game modes, rule changes and mechanics. New Mario party games can either be amazing or absolute stinkers. So that’s definitely a win.
Robotics Wins:
One of our quietest students spoke up and was leading some of the tasks at our bi-weekly meeting. There was some initial foot dragging, but after that he was on task and just checking in with questions. If he continues breaking out of his shell I think he will be great at this and get along alot better with the rest of the team. He’s from a local school, but not the same school as the rest of the team so I know its harder for him to jump in when he doesn’t see the rest of them outside of robotics.
Otherwise I’m looking forward to this next week and getting to watch the Lions play twice (tomorrow and Thanksgiving) and hoping they bring some more wins home.
I have the entire week off for Thanksgiving, and nowhere I need to go.
And it’s sinking in that I am 4 weeks away from a two week trip to Brussels.
I won the WCP cadathon!
Wait thats crazy I did too!
(And the Onshape PTC Award)
Thats crazy I did too!
So, I’ve gotten involved with another volunteer, but non-robotics, organization.
In my (current) town of residence, we have 6000 people, and are largely surrounded by farmland. As such, we don’t have enough folks to support a full-time paid fire department. But we do have a fairly lively volunteer department.
A few months back, when we moved into town, I had the audacity to ask around “Hey, what do you folks need help with?”, and the fire department showed up as a top candidate. So I started showing up.
Fast forward to today - I got the opportunity to participate in a training exercise, where several small fires were set inside a building that was donated to the department.
I learned a ton, both about all the work that goes into putting out fires, and about leadership and organization in the face of great challenge.
If I’m being honest with myself - I enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. A big plus for me though: If I can apply this learning to benefit the community around me, even better! In this context, doing this training - that was a great candidate for “second best win of the year”.
Even better - one of the students I had mentored on robotics many moons ago joined the fire department right after high school graduation, and as such out-ranks me. He was at the same training exercise, and took time out of his day to teach me a few things I did not know.
Being taught by one of my own students will be an experience I cherish my life through.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving here in the states, thank you to whoever started Weekly Wins. Those of us in FIRST Land should celebrate our little life accomplishments - and I do enjoy reading all of yours!
For me this week was a big one as a proud papa - my second oldest (and a nephew) football team won the AAAA State Championship! This comes thirty years after my team - same school - lost in the championship game; so a little bittersweet.
The robotics team (FRC4607) capped off the 2024 season with another off-season win at Minne-Mini Regional at Prior Lake High School. This marks a three peat and for a fourth time in the last five times (finished as finalists in 2018 and 2021). It is an awesome event as we train in new students in new roles. Thank you FRC 2169 and FUM for this event!
Yes, thank you so much @Andrew_Schreiber! Even though I’ve only gotten into these threads in the past couple months or so, its been great to post about my wins and see the wins of others
