My win…
I’ve seen an outpouring of community support the last few days, gives me a lot of hope in people - seeing a lot of kindness and empathy.
Got through the week. Considering I had a head cold midweek, that’s pretty good.
We’ve had a lot of new underclassmen interested in joining the team after recruitment for the next season. A very welcome change from last year, where we had zero new members.
Folks came through Chicago on a train trip (on their way to see Niagara falls among other things over the next two weeks; not all on the train), so I headed into the city to meet them and spend the day together!
Had a great brunch:
Waterfront:
Spent a good chunk of the day at the art Institute of Chicago, here is some of the famous paintings and prints, but there is so so so much more in there, that buiding is HUGE.
My dad in particular is a huge Frank Lloyd Wright fan, so we stopped by the Rookery
Finished off the day with deep dish, because why not.
That was a lot of walking… Dad’s a trooper though, his hip is getting bad, but he managed it all pretty well.
Otherwise making slow progress completely reworking Pairwise into useful season agnostic free scouting tools. At points code and in particular JavaScript is really really annoying. I am not a front end dev.
I survived so far
You were in Chicago and didn’t come to the Pack Expo International? It would’ve been great to talk with you as FRC4607 and FRC8516 were there as a combined team to compete in the Pack Challenge.
So for me it was this event. The Pack Expo International is one of the most amazing trade shows I have seen. The Expo is at the McCormick Convention Center and is absolutely amazing.
There is a great showing of FIRST teams including our friends from FRC 3313 from Alexandria, MN.
As for weekly wins, here is the press release from the Pack Challenge.
All of this and my other son is heading to USBANK Stadium for the 4A State Semifinals!
Though the week started off a little rough, Ive had a few good wins!
First off, got half of one of my finals done, and didn’t majorly embarrass myself while presenting it during the class so that’s a win.
One of my friends sent me a care package filled with all the Halloween candy they didn’t give out (and it was a lot) so I have that to munch on as my quarter comes to a close.
Biggest win however, was my college had their annual “Ugly sweater party” which I’ve learned is a very ticket event for, so I spent the morning camping out in line with some of my esports friends so we could get the sweaters lol. That was a ton of fun, and then after we actually got our sweaters, we had a ton of fun at the party, which was a nice break from everything going on
Oh and I got this plushie from the party too
I’m also going to my first ever local LAN tommorow, so I’m really excited for that
I took my linear algebra midterm this week. Been working on content creation and social media, lemme tell you it is not easy. Still managed to get a video that beat my previous one so I am happy
I met my new team for the first time! We all clicked together really well, and I’m still euphoric about how well it went. I’m excited for next week’s meeting because they’ve let me take the lead on building their Super Pit despite me being brand new to the team!
My wife and I made an impromptu trip to Frankenmuth this week. Spent some time at Bronner’s and then had the chicken dinner at Bavarian Inn.
I got a 1370 on my PSAT.
Had our first fall meeting, attendance was a little lower than hoped, but the returning group seems highly motivated to recruit or run the team as is if they had to. We went over blog updates which had lots of wins this summer (game piece preorder, new bumper rules, new legal electronics hardware, etc).
At work this week the company was a finalist for a manufacturing award so the crew went out for an awards night in Lansing while I was at a career tech ed advisory meeting. I got to sit in a room with my original coach and teacher and the current gen of teachers, so all 3 generations of IT related teachers were together again. We always have a good time.
Last night I saw someone from 1189 Gearheads at a bar in Grosse Pointe (should’ve expected that I guess, it is their home turf). I didn’t say hi, but I saw their hoodie from across the room.
We got back our wedding videos and they turned out great. Got through the final video and all the rough footage last night and this morning. Well worth the price we paid.
Survived through a pretty lousy three days due to some illness.
Also, got a lot of work done on the various IAs in IB.
Also, robot reorganization:
Representing 2013, 2016, 2017, 2019 and its beta chassis, 2022 and its alpha chassis, 2023, an arm, 2024 wood mockup, thrifty swerve modules, a chassis from around 2014, another electrical board, and 2 tables
I survived another week. just gotta keep taking it day by day, and the semester is almost over.
Finished my first college interview! It was scary and I was sick apparently, but I’m glad to have it done. Now I just have to wait for results.
Robotics related, we managed to get swerve running with YAGSL in <4 hours today. This is in command based, which we have never used before this year. I wasn’t able to attend the meeting, but through FaceTime I coached our Lead Programmer through it. Overall, we’re very excited with how quickly we’re getting through our full rewrite of our 2024 bot.
Oh also had a really great group call with some friends last night.
Also, I just posted my new PCB designs I’ve been working on! go check them out, I’m pretty proud of the work I did, even if they are simple
My 30th birthday was on Thursday and I had a really lovely day! At work, the head librarian let me create a display of all my favorite books from when I was a kid, and the students all wished me a happy birthday and checked out some of my faves (including some classics that never get checked out here, like Madeleine and Curious George). Then I came home and read in my hammock (birthday present!) on what was probably the last warm afternoon of autumn, then got some work done for my business. My partner took me out to dinner and then to the bookstore. 10/10 birthday, great start to my 30s!
