It’s getting chilly even here… anything good going on?
My win - we made it home from MI safely after seeing my family. It was an ok visit, though next time my brother suggests mediterranean food I’m going to pass… but I guess I kinda got over some of my fear of IVs as a result? Idk, silver linings.
Finally on winter break!!! yay!!!
In other news: I believe I mentioned buying gifts for friends last week- I got MORE GIFTS haha! dnd dice for everyone in the squad (somehow I’m the only non-dice goblin ), a plush, a really cool shirt that I know one of them wanted, and then some other nicknacks (like a couple of nerf guns and like 3d prints I commissioned from like 4 different people haha ) - I’m so excited for these people to get their gifts in a couple weeks because I’ve put a lot of effort, time, and love into it. I’m so excited to hear/see/read their reactions!!!
I have the parade of lights in a few hours and we’ve built out 8 led covered hard hats, one sign, 1 motorcycle helmet with glowing eyes and a mohawk, 1 golf cart covered in LEDs, and 1 motorized shopping cart covered in LEDs that I’ll be driving. oh yeah, and this was all in less than a week
Definitely a small win but made me feel good none the less, the local bagel shop in my town finally had chocolate chip cream cheese when I ordered, I haven’t been able to get it in months lol
And of course there’s a DND session tonight so I’m excited for that as well
I’ve been time sucked into Disney Dreamlight Valley. Its a game that hits my nostalgia, can satisfy my OCD tendencies with being able to rearrange literally everything, and is a perfect blend of animal crossing type actions + specific quests and an overall story that I always felt AC was missing.
I don’t find games that I sink into like this too often, or ones that the wife likes as well. Last night when I got home I was so excited I threw on my Sully Halloween costume as pajamas and we played for a good chunk of the night after dinner.
In robotics related wins I’ve been working on a team management/incremental game to publish on itch.io for kickoff this year. It’s aimed at being partly educational for people really unfamiliar with FIRST and the tasks teams deal with throughout a build season.
Ultimately there are not an unlimited number of FRC games or seasons I can use to keep the game truly endless so I’m not tying it to any specific season or game and each new season will have new goals that need to be done by the end of the season to ‘prestige’ and roll over to a new season. I got through most of my gameplay logic and how it should all work as well as the data structure, most of my time the rest of the month will be on the UI and testing.
First UI example, it's missing a few things, but to get the general idea across it works
I had my last week of classes. Just a few more assignments and my exams, and then I’m finally going home. It’s been snowing recently which has been nice. At this point, I just need to push through, only 9 days until I’m free. Lots of other things probably going on too, but tbh I’m kind of too tired to think of them all.
New tools are always fun, I have a bit of Milwaukee M18 stuff. Excited to work on a few nice M12 options for lightweight/compact work. Got this for a pretty ok Black Friday price (at least when you include the free shipping and battery, the extension wasn’t on sale, but is a major draw to this particular tool)
In other news I am finally making some progress on some major bugs and core functionality in Pairwise. Last week I got Google Oauth working, this week is database stuff.
Mad respect for those full stack devs out there, no idea how you can possibly keep all of the rube goldberg machine components straight in your head.
Same as @Andrew_Schreiber along with having made enough real life Rube Goldberg machines your brain just adapts… You start to think like that about everything. It’s a blessing and a curse
