Weekly Wins 2-25-2022

Well, we got to see events this week, that was cool. Anyone got other cool things? Robots working? Students doing cool things?

My win - I was happily surprised to see the outpouring of support for LGBTQ members of our community. So, good on this community.

First test-fit of one of my parts of a project at work looked really good…

…but that won’t be a legit win until we get to the whole “test function” part.

I got a better onboard 5G connection. And the robot was starting to drive around. (The programmers say their win is getting to program before the robot is mechanically finished.)

I learned how to roller skate! Albeit… I’m not very good at it…

We had a very nice visit from my daughter and her husband.

Edit: Andrew, in these sad times, thank you very much for continuing this series of posts where we can share the good things of life. And next week, I expect a flurry of great WINS!

I bought a new suit, and it looks really nice on me, so I’m excited to debut my new suit at regionals  My parents and sister arrive in İstanbul on Monday, that’s also pretty cool, they’re here for our regionals  Also, we got to set up 10 bendy buses in Izmir with FRC / İzmir Regional wrap-ads. That’s wicked exciting.

I got a good start on making the “hood” (convertible top) on my MG. I’ve never done this before, and the car doesn’t need to look good, so I figured I’d give it a try.

And our robot almost works…only a bit over a week left to finish it…

Was informed I would be doing “tech support” for all of our state testing this coming month. Means I do not need to proctor 6 hours of exams over 5 days.

  • Received a proper job offer week and a half ago
  • Graciously given time to sit on it until a decision on a phd offer came through
  • Recieved phd program offer yesterday afternoon.

Gonna ride this high through the weekend, then decisions need to be made, but still, good stuff.

That’s the whole point of them - I started them largely cuz I needed to see good news because my other half was going through some things. Trust me, I look forward to seeing what cool things everyone is doing.

T.A.S.** struck again. I was able to pick up a working, antique frequency counter (from the 1980’s) and an old, professional quality variac (not like the ones sold on Amazon) for $10 and $65 respectively from an antique store. After I got home, I saw the frequency counter on eBay for $160. The variac needed about 20 minutes of work to free up a jammed contact and would normally sell for most of a thousand dollars.

Found another project car waiting in lines at Disneyland. The excuse is that its an exact match James Bond model and we can add a flippy license plate and other extras.

This is quite possibly the most expensive habit I’ll ever form at this rate.

Photos? Stop teasing us.

Photos? Stop teasing us.

(and if it’s from the 80s it wont have a nice neon display…but I guess that’s ok?)

I got to pick the music we listened to in the shop yesterday so that was nice. Also, we’re almost done with our robot and the team is actually listening to my suggestions on cable management, something my team has never done before.

It uses individual 7-segment LED displays.

Won’t be able to post photos until next weekend. I just arrived at the airport for a work trip and won’t get back until Friday night. At least I am telling you how long you are being teased for

Are you going to keep the patina on your MG?

It doesn’t have much patina, but it does have a lot of neglect. I intend to add patina, by using it, as it is.

Glad to hear it’s not going to be a garage queen.

Every finished system on our robot is currently working. If that isn’t a win I don’t know what is.
