Weekly Wins 5-20-2022

This is me right now… I need sleep. So instead I want to hear what went well so I can draw the positive energy.

My win for the week is that I’ve gotten a large task done at work. Now to do a similar task again faster and to reinforce the lessons learned…

I moved all my Thingiverse stuff to Printables!

For those who don’t know, Thingiverse is a site for 3D printing that has been in pretty much a constant state of disrepair for years now. A lot of people have been growing dissatisfied with the site and it’s owner, MakerBot, so there’s now a competitor from Prusa, a very trusted company in the world of 3D printing.

Disrepair is an understatement. I got an email from them about a message on there a few weeks ago. Tried to log in to reply… 30 minutes later unable to access the message on their site I gave up.

I worked my first week of full time and signed the lease papers for my new apartment! I think I’m adulting now?

In addition, the makerspace at my university just got one hell of a server donated, and I have the privilege of setting up our brand new Poweredge R450 when it comes in!

Somehow maintained a 4.0 official GPA? With a 65% in heat transfer? I can officially fail every course from here on and keep something like a 3.2.

Some wack curve is going on but I’m not going to ask any questions; just keep the anxiety levels where they are for now.

Also finally Frankensteined one of my printers back into operation after a year of collecting dust and it’s printing beautifully without any calibration. Printrbot made some amazing stuff, sad that market forces weren’t aligned with their goals.

Tested positive for COVID this week, which was both a big bummer and relief after two afternoons of high fevers in a row. I’m slowly recovering in quarantine in a hotel room. My friends, college and robotics alike, have kept me in good spirits and helped keep me sane being alone in a room for the last 2.5 days, with 3 more to go.

While for most Rose students, it’s the end of the 10th week with finals on the horizon, I lucked out and had 3 final projects/ papers + 1 final canceled because I had a high enough test average in the class  Did my last project demo for that class earlier today which went very well and am finishing up the final project documentation for that along with a final paper.

Final bit of cool news actually came as a complete surprise. I’ve really gotten into old-fashioned printmaking through my college’s art professor. I took the COVID version of her printmaking class simultaneously with an internship my freshman year which combined 3D printing with traditional printmaking. This year, I finally got the opportunity to properly carve out a linoleum block and use the printmaking press. The attached piece wasn’t my final project but gives a rough idea of the medium and a sample of my work.

Anyways, she gave me a call out of the blue today, which I originally was concerned about, but resulted in her asking for my permission to put out feelers and see if any other professors would be interested in potentially buying a print of my final project if I made an edition out of it. I feel super honored to get this oppurtunity and that my professor picked up my interest in this particular medium (then again I did keep asking all quarter about if she knew how a local artist looking to donate his printmaking presses would be housed on campus  ). Originally, when we discussed the idea she had suggested reinvesting the profit into more printmaking supplies, but since my block is surrounding current issues very personal to me, upon thinking on it, I’m hoping to donate the proceeds to a local cause.

I discovered this:

High point of my week.

In other news, I’m feeling pretty confident about the one final I have left.

This week I got to see a friend who was in from Frankfurt - we don’t get to see each other a lot, and I think I laugh more with that friend than with anyone else I know. I also made a breakfast for some friends as a sort of going away party for one of my best friends who is moving to Brussels next week (I’ll go with her for a week to help her move/settle) So that one was both sad and happy, but mostly happy to have friends over for breakfast.

Traveling home from seeing my friend from Frankfurt the first time on the ferry - As Blair says - this is the most crowded city he’s seen and it’s like everyone went outside all at the same time

The view from another friends house where we met with our friend from Frankfurt for a second time this week - all the spikes just left of the sun are the old city - Fatih (Hagia Sophia, Sultanahmet, Topkapi, etc.) right side is Okmeydani, near my office, left is zeytinburnu, deep Deep back you can even see the northwest end of the city’s skyscrapers in Bahecesehir-Esenyurt - Friend’s house is on the asian side, and beyond the slightly visible water is the European side. Also, fun for me, is the HSR/Metro railway station in the middle of the left edge, with its attached Metrobüs terminal.

Breakfast - Turkish style + Pancakes (pancakes not shown as they weren’t on the table yet)

I take back the previous weekly win:

Found someone selling a car with my same drivetrain locally, and they were including a separate spare overdrive.

I traded my rebuilt standard for their unrebuilt overdrive transmission, and basically doubled the value of my car in the process. I could turn around and flip the rebuilt overdrive unit alone and pay for the entire car.

You can have multiple wins. I ain’t the win police.

But you won’t.

Should be only 2400 RPM at 60mph (vs 3000ish), so no, no we will not be selling the overdrive.

Still waaay under the cost of throwing in a Miata engine and transmission, so I can fool myself into thinking this will be cost-effective an practical.

Plus, I can put a switch on the gear knob and label it “ejector seat”. Priceless
