Weekly Wins 5-27-22

So, I’m not going to lie. I think a lot of folks, myself included, are really struggling to see good things this week. Please, if there’s something let’s share them so we can all celebrate good stuff.

I finally got back into building some stuff for combat robots. This is rev 2 of my featherweight (12lb) design. Yes it’s tiny, those are 2" wheels. My main concern is a lack of drive power. We’ll see in testing though.

I started making serious progress on losing weight, when I entered Turkiye on May 10th ish I was 77,5kg, and now I’m about 75kg, which is very exciting for me.

We also had a meeting of the WFFA mentors from Turkiye which was really nice

And I flew with one of my best friends to Belgium as she’s moving here. I came to help her for a week ish, get settled, etc, before I fly to the US for community Conferences.

So far I’ve only taken one decent picture here, in Diegem (near Brussels).

I went on a canoe trip this past weekend on the Buffalo River in Arkansas. Super fun trip. The scenery was beautiful and it was nice to be disconnected for a couple days. I snapped an awesome pic on the way out.

New job is going well, slowly making progress on my enormous task list that I’ve been trying to for weeks, and…

I took a break from CD. 15874543/10 Would suggest.

I managed to shock a few students today.

Scene: Torbot shop, late in the day. There’s a few students and a few robots around. One of the students asked me about one of the robots off on one side. One that’s been the subject of a few “wins” posts before as it’s undergoing major repair/rebuild. One that happens to be older than most of the students (@Stanford_Orfila was it you or Richie pointing out the age gap afterwards?).

Specifically: “What does it do?” To which I responded something to the effect of “Want to see it in operation? If so, help out real quick!” 5 minutes later, there were quite a few phones pointed at it as it moved around. Some help later and it was in the Hangar and on a bar (though not under its own power as it doesn’t have a functional climb yet).

What’s the win here?

Inspiration. Got several students’ faces lighting up watching FRC history wake up.

Yeah that was me. There was only one person in the room older than the robot. Very cool to see something yellow and blue running around again.

Finals are over and school’s out!

I have a fun summer planned, I took a motorcycle safety class this last weekend and I have an internship with Purdue starting next week. Today I got to watch the Indy 500 with my grandpa and great-grandpa and ate a juuuust a little bit of dessert. Also although people hit the wall during the race, everyone walked away from their cars and no one was hurt so that’s a plus.

Stay safe, leave space. Had a not so fun chat last week with someone who didn’t leave enough space and had a truck stop short on them… they went over their handlebars, bike was totaled. But do have fun.

Got married and went on my honeymoon and managed to stay safe and COVID-free. If that’s not a series of huge wins, I don’t know what is.

I don’t know how I forgot the biggest win I had last week (probably because it happened Monday) after living here 6 months we finally got the window coverings we bought installed. I’ve been sleeping way better this last week because my room is actually dark. And my office is usable in the afternoon now that I can prevent the sun from turning it into a sauna.

Got out of quarantine Monday. Spent Tuesday - Thursday packing up my apartment and putting it in storage for summer for the first time. Made it back to California in one piece after sprinting thru the Vegas airport. Not looking forward to having to move again in a week but looking forward to exploring LA this summer and meeting up with old friends.
