I think a bunch of folks are done with schools now? So I guess some of you should have wins (the teachers for not having to deal with students for a bit?) But anyone else got anything cool?
My win is vague - but shipped some code at work that I’m happy with. It was cool and I still feel really comfortable making changes in our code base which is a definite improvement over some places I’ve worked.
We just had our Open House this past Wednesday and since then we’ve had 20 new students sign up for the offseason. I feel really good about that not only because it’s better for the team but also because I spearheaded recruitment this season and coordinated the vast majority of it.
Also, tomorrow I’m going to our primary driver’s grad party and it’s also mom’s birthday! Lots to celebrate this weekend.
Currently, I can bomb 2/3 of my finals and still pass those classes. No plans to actually do this but it certainly takes some pressure off of getting them perfect.
My branch finally closed out a massive (6 months of work by one of my analysts, plus as many weeks by me) data request Friday. My usual scope is getting through the week day by day, so this is a BIG DEAL. Area of coverage: I managed to negotiate it down to only one eighth of the planet. No kidding. Time of coverage, only three quarters of the year. The output of our acoustic models will be used to score simulations that will likely drive US Navy tactics, techniques, and procedures for the next decade in that eighth of the planet. If you want to do work that matters, you can do a lot worse than finding employment in the Department of Defense.
Also, we closed out another multi-month project with more limited geographic scope but of strategic importance on Friday that will help the navy operate if or maybe when it becomes necessary. And oh yes, we kept up our usual weekly and monthly productions.
Saving this for last, though I should have reported it last week: I pitched a concept for a new production environment for my co-workers for the next decade that appears to resonate. I expect that most of the rest of my career outside of daily production concerns will be refining this concept and making it a reality. I had been planning to retire in October of '24, but if this concept catches fire and if things flow at the rate I’m hoping, it might keep me employed another year or two to help make it a reality. This might end up being the biggest win of my career, eclipsing a Meritorious Civilian Service award [Looks great on my office wall!] for my role writing and editing about half of the Navy’s 101 textbook on oceanography and acoustics. I haven’t pushed back my retirement date yet, but maybe…
I had a portable air conditioner in my garage/shop, it got flooded a couple of years ago and I’ve been reluctant to try turning it back on again. I finally did it this week and it still works to make cool air. The display is shot but it hasn’t caught on fire yet (that’s usually the first sign of trouble) I might actually be able to survive in the garage as a shop this summer!
Max coolness means just pressing the down button like a hundred times and it’ll be fine. The display doesn’t matter to me personally so this is a win in my book!
Further Edit: after letting it run for a day the screen has come back to life on its own. I am in shock and awe. Maybe the heating up of the internal components as it runs removed any excess liquid and dried it out? Whatever a win is a win is a win
Yeah, I mean we probably could. I’d expect it would be the honor cords FIRST sells if we did. They aren’t a really a big thing at my school though so I don’t know if anyone cares enough to make it happen.
year 1 of being a sports photographer is done - wow what a ride… 68 games covered, 2 championship WINS, over 200 published photos, and so many more special moments. Looking forward to year 2…
Competed at a math competition and did better than expected.
We also had a ton of fun.
The team demonstrated the robot at a mini maker Faire and our schools stem night.
I got to present with the team about engineering to our 5th grade classes and we gave them the chance to learn by making snap circuits. I understand the pains of teaching 5th grade now.
