We know the deal - what went well for you this week?
For me, I had some excellent conversations with coworkers and made some great progress on the bot from last week. Have some iteration on the frame to do but generally happy.

A loss that is also a win:
Equipment at work made horrible noise yesterday. Initial troubleshooting found nothing, more troubleshooting found the problem, and it’ll possibly take some major work to fix.
The win? We found it BEFORE the equipment left the company… And as a design issue it’s a semi-easy fix for future builds.
Bought and installed a 4TB HDD to do some file rearranging inside my computer. It was also long overdue for a cleaning, so I got that done also.
My phone now tells me theres “debris/moisture” in its charging port though, so i guess i need to go figure out what happened to that… slapping it in front of a fan for 20 got what was likely moisture out, so thats nice.
Bought another car of the same model I already owned…for the price of the repair panels I was just about to buy before I decided to check local offerings one last time. No engine, but already had enough parts to build a few.
If you need a windshield or transmission for a Sunbeam Alpine I have at least 3.
Held an open house Wednesday and had a great turn out, especially for our start up FLL and FTC teams.
Presented my thesis and maybe probably passed
Are working with our public library to start up FLL teams for all of the schools. Already have a ton of support and interest from the community.
Had a fantastic week of vacation with my family and partner, and about to start another week (though calmer)
I went to Brussels to help a friend move there this week. Brussels is like the strange child of a three way of Chicago, Paris, and Ä°stanbul. Also there was a surprisingly large number of turkish people there which made it easier for me to communicate.
Also they have a ton of trains there. And trams. My friend was staying in diegem a town just outside the city limits, it was a quick 15 minute train ride into the city center, super easy, can walk everywhere and just it’s nice. My kind of place
I fixed my garage door - using a scrap robot part that was originally about 8" of 1-1/2 x 1/8 angle aluminum, a 1/4-20 BHCS and nylock. Tools used included a 1# hammer, Milwaukee M18 drill, 1/4" drill bit, three wood clamps, a 7/16" wrench, and a good-ol’ 5/32 allen wrench.
Met lots of new people on a week-long trip for school! Had tons of fun canoeing, swimming, playing music, and boating. And recruited an old member of our team!
Well, I messaged @Lexeo at like 9 PM a few days ago asking if we could get pink zipties as a completely random thought of the day, and basically we have a package of pink zipties for our team because we have cool mentors.
Nothing to do with team colors, but some of the girls on the team wanted to put something pink on the robot because it’s fun.
Been to like a billion graduation parties for my friends as well, so I’ve had my fair share of cake and Chick-fil-a nuggets.
Got LASIK on Thursday. Two hours of pain but now my vision is nearly as good as it was with glasses and it’s supposed to only get better in the coming weeks.
Got a new van to replace the previous one that was getting on in years. Have to guarantee that robot hauling ability.
Dropped some old robotics merchandise from other teams gathering dust in my closet to some 3128 members. All in all, pretty decent spring cleaning (15 items less in the closet) and potentially another round of it at the end of the summer as there’s still a decent amount sitting in my closet at home that doesn’t get too much wear.
Showed a friend of mine who’s working in San Diego around town. She was very entertained by the sea lions down at La Jolla Cove. It was interesting to compare what differs between the West Coast vs. East Coast (stores, beaches, roads, etc.).
Took the plunge and re-dyed half of my hair a permanent red on Thursday to hopefully last longer than the week semi-permanent stays in. Otherwise, all moved in for the summer in LA. The 405 wasn’t too bad on the way up but I’m sure I’ll get more opinionated about traffic and freeways here as the summer moves on
You got lucky.
–Signed, Someone who is all too familiar with the Parking Lot 405.
And yes, you’ll become very familiar with traffic and freeways… exactly how familiar and opinionated you get depends on which freeways you’re near.
Using the right dye helps a lot. But I’ve also found that red just fades really quick.
Bleaching will also help the color stick to your hair, just don’t shampoo for a few days prior so you get some oil on your scalp to protect it.
(The other half and I just redid our hair colors this weekend - she’s kept her pink and black and I changed to a slightly redder purple)
Old Sunbeam Alpine (ft. absolutely trashed sills under the doors)
New Sunbeam Alpine
Bonus perk is that I swapped a Series 1 for a Series 2, so we can copy the Dr. No Bond car down to the letter.
I hosted a board game tournament in NYC on the 4th! It was the first ever irl event I’ve done and it went really well. Around 24 people showed up and it was a ton of fun playing games and chatting about the nerdy stuff all of us do when not playing board games.
Gotta say, event organization is dangerously entertaining. Perhaps one day I’ll be organizing the ol’ robots? We’ll see.
