Weekly Wins 7-1-2022

Yeah, guess I need to post these earlier in the day. But whatever, what went well this week?

The other half and I just booked stuff for a vacation, spending a week a ways further west.

Took a midweek day off, had nice relaxing day, then buckled back in and pushed most of a surprise project dropped on my already busy head through approvals today.

And 3-day weekend to boot.

I returned to Chicago for two of my friends’ wedding, who are also a GAs in the midwest area  It’s a lot of fun catching up more (we got to see each other a little a couple weeks ago, they helped me out while I got stuck in Chicago with COVID a couple weeks back too) It’s always nice being in Chicago in the summer. It’s such a gorgeous city. And the trains are nice when they work.

The team continued expanding on and refining their prototype mechanisms. The shooter team was able to adjust various aspects of their prototype so that the shot is repeatable enough they can get the ball to land within 2-3 inch range at about 30 ft. The accuracy isn’t really needed in this past year’s game but knowing how to get the accuracy will be useful in future years. The girls working on the intake mechanism added a “car wash” to sweep the ball to one side so it can go into a narrow tunnel to go to the shooter. It was effective enough that they will need only one of them since it can push the ball across half the width of the robot chassis.

On a personal note, I succumbed to TAS * yet again.

I had purchased the saw several years ago from a pawnshop for about $100 because the blade wouldn’t run when trying to cut. It needed an extra washer on the clutch mechanism to get it working properly.

TAS - Tool Acquisition Syndrome.

The week leading up to July 4th is always a big fundraising week for our team. We partner with Phantom Fireworks to man a fireworks booth where we get around ~45% of all firework sales as profit for the team.

I heavily recommend applying for this fundraiser if you are in Phantom Firework’s area of operations and have a 501(c)(3) since you can host the fundraiser every year if you are accepted.

Dean Kamen came to our shop on Tuesday and gave our team a very inspiring talk. He also got to drive our 2022 robot and I got to snap one of my favorite photos of the year:

It was incredible to see just how proud he is of what he helped create

We fixed a good chunk of an air leak we’ve been dealing with since Worlds.

Additionally, I’ve been working for a long time on shooting on the fly, and it’s been going really well, especially given that we aren’t even running a turret!
