So, does anyone have some good wins this week? Something cool? Something neat? Something you’re proud of?
My win as lame as it sounds, we had a storm this morning that knocked out power. It came back before anything in the fridge spoiled and, despite being on-call for work, nothing major broke during the time I was offline.
Updated my basement window. It’s funny how that turtle I rescued a while back promoted me into completely remodeling the window well. Any future turtles that get trapped here should feel right at home.
This was followed an hour later with a distinct non win of GF having a medical issue resulting in an ER visit (she is ok, but stuff needs to be addressed)
I was thinking yesterday that I’d made a pretty bad mistake at work, causing massive rework.
Turns out, past me anticipated the issue and had the part made to the size we needed the first time. Saves us several thousand USD and several weeks of time.
We had new sod put in the yard - it looks good and the front lawn is finally flat. Now if we just get enough rain to keep it alive. (Watering 3 times a day!)
Kept the devil chilly last Saturday. First time in my 20 years of doing this* that I’ve been drafted for offense and had the alliance bring home gold.
I’m down over 8 pounds this month and seeing the good side of 250 again. Nothing wild, just eating less dumb and closing the Move ring.
Footnote to point 1
Peachtree 2011 (2815): Defense.
Palmetto 2011 (2815): Defense.
Palmetto 2012 (2815): Offense, but we weren’t drafted–we were the backup called in.
Orlando 2014 (4901): You could argue this one, but after the auto preload we were giving balls the most perfunctory inbounding–receive ball, set ball on carpet–before going back to defense. In Week 3, nobody had really figured out the whole “if it hits something springy on the robot and bounces back to the human player that meets the legal definition of an assist” thing.
I took a trip on the ferries to see a friend in the Island Borough of İstanbul, which is 100% car-free. That was a lot of fun. It was relaxing, and that’s what I need at the moment because the past week has been… difficult.
There’s a set of islands (Prince’s Islands) that form one of the boroughs of İstanbul in the Marmara sea, which have no cars, some electric-golf-cart like buses, and mostly are just small so everyone walks. They’re historic, super cute, and the weather is like 4C cooler than the city, so it’s a slight reprieve from the insane summer heat. There’s a lot more flowers and wall-creeping greenery and stuff there too, so it’s just pleasant. A nice break with a bunch of friends.
I also successfully managed to cook dinner for 11 people on Friday night, which was pretty big for me given the events of the week. We had really good homemade butter chicken, Samosa, and some Nestle recipe cookies.
