Weekly Wins 8-2-2024

Hopefully NOT posted in whatever random forum this time…

Any wins this week? Something good? Just survive the week?

Mine is I survived. I was on-call this week and it was very high stress. Nothing busted just lots of context switching to wildly different things.

Completed my first big scary career presentation at work.

While nerve-racking and having to go pretty far off the expected path, I’d say it didn’t go badly.

Excited for NE Mentor Conference tomorrow!

Had my first experience swinging a machete through a mess of SharePoint permissions. Woo!

Booked tickets and rental cars and fleshed out my forthcoming trip to Paris. Which, since I will be in the air a week from now, yeah guess I ought to!

Oh, and opened up SCRIW registrations. Happy to have that dialed in.

Replacement circuit board showed up for our fridge and it was installed! I used to work with the installation tech at one of my old scout summer camp jobs. Small world.

This week at work I spent a lot of time working on automated PDF report generation from visual recognition data. I started with portrait US letter and I’m working through the list. I have very specific data and the layout, size and more matters greatly as the page size/orientation changes. Also learned I can do a lot with html canvases.

We had our wedding shower last weekend so this week I’ve been putting together furniture items. I’ve done 2 hampers, a shoe rack and a printer table/file cabinet. We were able to box up our old cookware and replace it/reorganize the kitchen as well.

Finally this is a silly win but I found Babe on Max and I haven’t watched it since I was too little to fully get all of it. What a great movie. I couldn’t even tell some of the animals were animatronic Jim Henson puppets back then. Now it’s a bit more obvious, but still a fantastic way to spend an evening.

Full of wins this week

Biggest win first:

  • Fixed the ticking sound coming from the bedroom ceiling fan. (Wiring rubbing on the motor, hitting some screw heads. Worn wires but insulation still in tact; I did not install this fan, not my fault)

Other big stuff:

  • Managed a 5x or better improvment with some optimization on the algorithm I am working on, more to go still.
  • Had a phenominal advising meeting with one of my profs.
  • Worked at least partially through some tough relationship stuff, those conversations are hard to have, but part of it.

Robot wins:

  • We got a proper logger on the robot working (which has been on my todo for a LONG time)
  • Vision swerve pose integration (orbit style) is working (needs more testing), but is working

Personal wins:

  • My paycheck that destroyed last week got replaced ($200 more dollars in my pocket)
  • I have a 8177 Vector hoodie headed my way (should arrive later today)
  • I got my senior photos done on Tuesday (man, i’m getting old)
  • I’m getting consistent on my LeetCode grind again
  • My friends visited me at work today

Other:

  • oh and we are now closer to the 2025 season

Losses:

  • constant 502 errors on CD (can we please be done with reprocessing)

Water in the church basement.

Why is that a win? Because it was clean water (not sewage) and with the help of about 6 people it could be removed with wet vacs and mops. Nothing like Aug 2014 when there was 7 feet of water in the basement and almost everything was lost.

Not much damage, because most things were stored off the floor or in plastic bins.

I stood up to one of my closest friends, even though it was hard and I didn’t want to. I knew it was a necessary thing to do though.

I also went to the National Museum of Natural History yesterday and it was SO COOL! It got me thinking more about what I’m going to study in college and it’s so exciting.

Survived a trip to visit family on the east coast! But seriously, it was good to see my parents and my brother and his family. Brother and fam are going to Brussels for two years (state dept job) in a couple of weeks. And I don’t get to see my parents much since they moved from California to Virginia.

Splurge win: Very glad I opted for 1st class for the trip as the return trip out of Reagan National was delayed 2 hours due to lightning… after we boarded. Took full advantage of the amenities.

Robotics win: Returned home to find the school district had finished installing new power outlets and ceiling drops in the machine shop.

Spent Friday afternoon moving all of our stuff in. Room doesn’t look so big anymore.

We’ll be back in today to finished cleaning our old room (another teacher moving in) and begin organizing all of our junk.

Did they relocate the emergency stop button yet?

The button is exposed now but only connected to a few old outlets.

Mostly just survived the week, works been ramping up as we get closer to the school year so that’s been fun.
Two small wins, got over my fear of phone calls to get my new kitten a vet appointment and took her in this week and she’s all good! Also scheduled my move in date for college, so all that’s left is to move in at the end of the month.

Just out of curiosity have you studied photography because those photos look really good and they almost look professional

Edit: My fav one is the Aquarium one

Busy week lead to not much progress of my shelf enclosure, but did score a really nice sewing machine + table at the local thrift store for $35. Haven’t had a chance to hook it up to test full functionality, but everything appears to move properly at least. Also the model is a Singer 626, so clearly I’m naming the machine ‘Stitch’.

That’s great, always so cool to see other people’s thrift finds!

I got a great haul of clothes myself this week, and I absolutely love them.

Hey there, thank you so much for the compliments! Yes, I have professionally studied both photography and videographer, albeit in a limited capacity. I was also shooting on a Samsung Galaxy S23, which has a really good camera.

Ceiling drops are awesome! Just remember to train everyone to give them a quick wipe-down before retracting so they don’t build up dust, shavings, etc. which can gum-up the works over time.
