Weekly Wins 8-25-2023

No gif this week because mobile.

What went well? Anything cool in the off season?

For me - in spite of dtw flooding and our flight being cancelled we made it to michigan for a friend of mines wedding. Just with about twice the driving we planned for.

Looking forward to relaxing for a few days.

Edit: Back from the wedding - it was gorgeous and it was great seeing some old friends again (and meeting some new ones)

Got signoff on a project I’ve been on for the last 2+ years - not without some last minute debug but that makes it all the sweeter.

On to the next one

On Wednesday, I got the youth soccer schedule done for my area. 1411 games.

On Thursday, we bought a new car. 2023 Ford Escape, to replace the 2015 one we had. The dealer was able to find a car in the area in the exact color and with the exact equipment we wanted.

Plus, there’s a new troop of gorillas at the Detroit Zoo.

I’m liking this out of my policy there are no bad wins and I like them all, don’t infer more than that.

Went on vacation to Watkins Glenn and saw a bunch of other parks, such as Cayuga, Taughannok, Steam Town and a bunch of other things.
Also found out that I have been doing the wrong math homework the entire summer, and cant do the correct ones because of a power outage that happened right when we got back home.
I also just found out they dont fricking offer the classes I thought I was doing the homework for, and didn’t update everything across the site, or notify any of us when they did so despite telling me the classes still existed the entirety of last year.

We had recruitment booths up at our districts high schools 3 days this week. The students ran the booths more or less on their own which is a win for me. In years past I would be there all day and take the time off work. This year I finally go to just drop off and pick up supplies! Maybe next year we’ll be together enough to have someone else who will be attending the event take the stuff. However no one wants to be responsible for transporting the robot so I guess I get it.

I’m hoping we get a lot of people to our open house. We gave out flyers with a contact form, our website, socials on qr codes and the dates and times.

We gave out at least 40 flyers cuz I had to print extras. So double wins I’m hoping!

I got the keys to my new apartment this week! It’s a big upgrade from my current apartment and I’m really excited to have a little more space.

Currently enjoying my last work-from-home day of the summer, before school starts next week!

Back to school. I thought I might be a little rusty with the trombone but my range and tonality is significantly better. Which is a very good thing because I’m the school’s only student trombone now :grimacing:

I have a rather silly win as well. I can’t promise I’ll keep this link up long but I made a really not that useful PDF viewer with last years game manual as a demo. It loads the PDF page in a 3d “world” where maybe in the future we can also load in 3d field models to overlay over the manual. For now it loads each page and you can flip it around like a piece of flat paper… Pictures are worth 1,000 words, so being able to see the mesh model of the field while you read the kickoff manual PDF would be worth like 1,000,000 words right?

Edit: in case the link dies here’s some pictures.

I passed all my courses this term (with an average of no less than 73)! First time I’ve done that since 1st year.

Coming back and mentoring FRC was what gave me the motivation to stick it through my sensors and instrumentation course, and signal processing course.

Felt cute, might delete later?

I have it currently hosted on repl.it (online ide) with a web hosting server, so it’s not meant to be a long term permanent solution. Maybe I could make it a permanent demo on FRCzero but idk if it’s worth it for what little it does at the moment

I reffed for my first ever high school soccer games and they went well, feet hurt tho since it was a double header, also got acclimated to taking college classes (in my senior year), so that was nice, I was worried it wouldn’t go smooth but it did

The new mentor who joined a week ago brought along a friend from the same team to help mentor us because the team they were on have lots of mentors and not as many students as we do.

The team held several student orientations and parent meetings. It looks like over 150 students signing up and about 140 parents attending the parent meeting. Quite a few parents have stepped forward to help with areas such as programming, workshop supervision and mechanical construction.

The team was able to install the control system panels in their off=season robot and get them partially connected. All the bumper sections are assembled and they started attaching the fabric.

My wife and I went to a local community theatre to watch a hilarious melodrama, “Peril On The High Seas.” The audience members were encouraged to heckle the villains and were given bags of popcorn to throw at them. It was full of corny jokes and many of the characters had names that played on their occupations like Captain Barney Kuhl and the waiter Carey de Mille.
