Weekly Wins 9-1-2023

No, it’s not September already right? Ugh, yeah it is I guess. Anyone got something cool that’s happened this week?

My win - I booked a vacation for over Thanksgiving and I’m kinda excited for it.

  • Got a WFH day! There’s a six-month wait (and a fairly perfunctory approval) for new hires, and I’ve finally run out the clock. Got in a few trainings that I’d been needing to knock out.
  • My AMS showed up, so setting it up for multi-color fun is in my weekend plans.
  • SCRIW had its single biggest week of signups in possibly ever.

My team had our interest meetings for new members, and we got a good amount of people! I also experienced some important life events.

Just did a 43ish mile hike around Mt Hood in 16 hours. Although some of my muscles definitely didn’t “win”.

Y’all know what I said last week about liking all wins… some of you have some weird wins :stuck_out_tongue:

Jokes aside, that’s really cool.

You’re not wrong. It was cloudy and rainy, so I can’t even say that I got great views!

FINALLY got clearance to start full-speed working on a work project that’s been hanging/dragging for months.

It’s probably about 75% done already (started Wednesday as I recall?). I estimated 2-4 weeks on “general principles”. Could finish Tuesday if I really pushed it but I don’t want to risk this thing messing up.

We had a “recovery” practice for soccer today and I played as a striker in a mini-scrimmage we had (JV, some varsity, and girls). I’m a goalkeeper.
I wasn’t great but man it sure is fun to shoot balls.

Just hit 60lbs lost over the last 11mo! Also about to hit 6mo on Hormone Replacement (technically next week) and starting to really notice and appreciate the changes, and finally feeling myself in a way I hadn’t in a very very long time.

School started, and it’s not a complete nightmare so far!
A quick and dirty CAD thing I did for a combat robot team I’m on got posted to the Switchback instagram! I am very happy to see something of ours get any attention, despite being posted as a joke. Also @Greg_Needel the name of the team got spelled wrong, its currently listed as Circular Robotics, however the actual name of the team is Ciruclar Robotics, switching the u and c. We have been pronouncing it Seer-u-clar Robotics.
And speaking of stupid CAD things, I started another one:

The weapon module isn’t done yet, and the back wheel has a lot of clearence testing to be done, but its coming along well for being on day two of any work!

This past Sunday wrapped up the 20th season of free weekly summer concerts that we’ve put on for our community. What started as us begging any musician we could find to come play on a corner of the playground has grown to where we have top regional acts coming to us asking for a spot. As has become our custom, on the final night we have a food/donation drive to support our local free meal site and food pantry. This year brought in ~$1600 and 380lbs of food.

I turned 21 on Monday, and while this week has been a whirlwind I have nothing crazy to do over the 3 day weekend.

My wife and I took a picnic lunch and went to Algonac State Park along the St. Clair River. We relaxed, read books, and watched 7 freighters go by in about a 5 hour period.

I appreciate (and loathe, equally) all the workhorse machines that our team has been using, so some annual maintenance was in order.

Finally am getting to the root problem with the Craftsman sander to fix the dust handler.

I found these bearings for the knurled pulley were seized up. This is the furthest I’ve torn this machine apart in the 4-5 times I’ve opened it to deep clean.

So looking forward to seeing it running well again. Also, did some cleaning and new bearings to the vertical band saw and will get the grinder wheels changed.

A win win this time.

7th time teaming with Team 3683 and our first event win (together). The curse is broken.

Two wins!

I’ve been working on a server system for at home to keep track of tasks, shopping list, budgeting, etc. I got the tasks and shopping list parts working so that was cool!

Then while on a nice little weekend trip we ran into a robot at the movies!

That little guy carries 88lbs across 4 shelves. It’s a runner from the kitchen (it’s like a movie theater/restaurant). So the wait staff/ushers wait at the theater and the robots bring the food to them from the kitchen, then the humans bring the food to the people in the theater. Kinda cool. Companies Richtech Robotics. Idk if anyone in FRC knows them, is sponsored by, etc but pretty cool to see in the wild.

I worked Red Stick Rumble this past weekend, queueing. I got to work it with @PereBear (referee) as well as Veronica, who worked her first FRC event since she left the team in 2016. Both Veronica and Perry have worked for me as queuers at a few FLL state championships in the mean time.
I also had a nice long phone chat with Mykah (@ExploitSage), my eldest.
Finally, my supervisor, Craig, retired Thursday. Not so much a win for me as for for him. On his way out, he did what he’d been threatening to do for at least a decade - gave me a “Golden Pocket Protector Award” plaque for supreme geekiness, in front of our work division. The contents of the pocket protector included a six inch slide rule, an engineer’s measuring rule, a pen, a mechanical pencil, and a dumdum lollipop. Conveniently, I was actually wearing a Hawaiian shirt with a pocket that day, and I proudly wore a secondary golden pocket protector the rest of the day.

I finally finished my summer assignments (albeit 9 hours before school starts).
Time to write like 30 college essays. Being a senior is fun!
