Honestly, long weekend. Looking forward to it. It’s been a good week but really just looking forward to a nice long weekend.

Something that happened several weeks ago that I forgot to mention. Previously had been having vehicle issues that I kind of thought I resolved but hadn’t really. Eventually the dealer service department was able to diagnose a low voltage issue in the starter control relay and got a replacement TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) that actually fixed the issue. It was one of those issues that I was constantly seeing but they had a hard time catching to even start diagnosing (yeah hardware heisenbugs), so the big win is them figuring out the issue and the warranty covering it.

Finally formed the vex teams I’ll be coaching at work. Getting paid to mentor is very cool, and I’m loving it. Very excited for what our competitions bring!

I got out and about on the ferries this week, which it’s been a while since I was able to do that. I do love the ferries.

Behind this ferry of course is the imperial palace, and the famous mosques and such, which the ferry passes to get where I was standing

I’ve been able to meet new people, and see some of my friends I haven’t been able to catch up with in a long time this week, so that’s always fun, and we’re hiring new people at work and that’s very exciting. Hopefully it will result in a more even workload, but also result in us being able to do more

Also as a result of my heel deciding to say a soft “no”, I got to ride Metrobüs a few times this week, which is a bus that basically only has extreme opinions. You either LOVE it or HATE it, and I LOVE it. Not a lot of transit lines move you at an average of 38kph from entering the turnstiles, to leaving the turnstiles. And I don’t commute at rush hour usually - though one of the four times I was on it this week was rush hour. I had to wait until about 6 or 7 busses passed to find one I could board (I dunno, like 60 seconds). I also like crowds, and I have a short three stop commute, so rush hour does not annoy me like it annoys many people. I am inside the turnstiles for about 3min:15sec usually when I take Metrobüs. Usually I just walk all the way to work, but like I said, my heel was in semi-revolt this week.

Here is a shot of Metrobüs as I was exiting the station at work. They’re also redoing the busway, and changing it from asfalt to concrete, which is really exciting. (yeah, I know, my idea of exciting is odd).

I was able to compile and publish the schedule for recreational soccer games, nearly 950 games. Usually I have 2-1/2 weeks to do it. Because of delays in getting information, I only had 6 days to complete it. Thank goodness for retirement. I would never been able to do it after 8 hours of “real” work.

My team’s MK4 swerve modules finally shipped!
They’ll be here in time for next season in case the new game happens to call for it.

We had our first official meeting of the school year on Thursday, and we got 8 new students to join our Telegram channel for team communication and news. It’s important for us to get a lot of new members this year due to having 10-15 members who are currently seniors.

We finally got to test our swerve drive for the first time and it was extremely successful for like 5 minutes. After that though, we encountered some issues with our code that we need to fix after Labor Day. Hopefully we will be posting soon about our fun little summer swerve drive project.

My first products as a full time employee went live this week so that’s pretty cool.

We had our first set of official meetings for FTC and had enough participants to need to start a 4th team.

I got to watch Purdue kick off their football season (that’s the win, not them being unable to hold on to the lead in the last 2 minutes).

I made it through my first week at my new job as a middle school makerspace coordinator! Exhausting getting started in a new place and a new job, but I think I’m really going to love it.

  • Most of the trainings and professional development sessions were actually really helpful and interesting
  • Starting to make friends at work
  • Got the makerspace about 80% set up (everything was moved out over the summer for room renovations)
  • Confirmed that the school is starting an FTC team this year for 8th graders, AND I’m going to be paid to coach!!!

The team held a safety training session for 25 new members. There were also 3 parents who volunteered to help mentor the team including one who has a background in embedded programming. There will be at least one more safety training of a similar size next week.

The first Tim Hortons in the Houston area opened. It was jammed with Canucks.

Thanks to high school robotics, I was able to get a business lead position at my University’s Underwater robotics club. It’s been a interesting week to say the least.

But have you survived any California parking lots (interstate or otherwise)?

Speaking of surviving, survived the first of two bike rides in the heat this weekend; the second is tomorrow.
