If you were listening to the event soundtrack (as I was), you may have noticed that some of the normal songs that you would hear at FIRST events sounded a little different. Well, that is because FIRST chose to replace the songs with the parodies from none other than Weird Al Yankovic.
As to why they did this, I believe that it was because those songs that they had replaced were against the Twitch copyright rules (it was Beat It and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun that were replaced). Although, I could be totally wrong. Is there a concrete reason as to why they did this?

They did this at regionals too. Both parodies are about food and they played them during lunch, seems straightforward.

This probably isn’t it, as weird al has the copyright to his music too.
Streamers kind of stopped caring about the DMCA rules again, big streamers split their audio so no music gets saved in their vods. If FIRST gets their 50 Twitch accounts banned later with automated DMCA strikes, they will have to find someone to talk to 
I’m not actually privy to the agreements FIRST and the A/V crews they use permissions to play and/or broadcast any given music. From the twitch side, twitch is going to automute anything it’s autodetectors pick up, and VOD-trawling copyright bots can claim strikes against it.

It was Weird Al’s Eat It, followed by Hot Buttered Popcorn, that I figured it was a hint that the A/V guys were hungry. But I can go with a subtle “go buy some food” announcement.

Rights to Weird Al’s music are protected under the same copyright system as every other major-label artist. Whatever detection system Twitch licenses (Google’s Content ID, or something similar) will catch it like any other catalog. Playing Al was a DJ’s preference, not an attempt to avoid The Man.
Given this crowd, there should be more Al played.

I don’t care what they play, but at least have the budget to not play the same 10 songs for the entirety of qualification matches. It became utterly ridiculous. It’s really not that hard people.
