I’m going into my third year of competing in FRC this year, and I’m more curious than ever about previous games and robot designs. What are some of the coolest and most unique bots you’ve seen from any game? I want to see what’s out there!
Any of 971’s robots, they somehow cook up one of the most creative bots every season
I came across their bot from 2019, and it’s definitely interesting.
I have a whole presentation on this one… but that would be too long for this.
71 in 2002 (walker drive)
1501 in 2010 (triangular robot, with 3 scoring devices)
1519 in 2008 (BEFORE the rules adjustment)
In no particular order…
From recent years, I have to say 4907’s 2022 robot and 1690s robots from 2022 and 2023 have all been absolutely incredible.
What were the rules adjustments?
I remember seeing their bot in person at worlds that year, and it blew my mind! Definitely one of my favorite bots from that year.
Edit: I’m talking about 4907, whoops
My favorite that I saw in-person was 469 in 2010.
A redefinition of ROBOT in between seasons…
In season, an interpretation of the bumper rules was all that stood between 1519 and a highly modular robot. (Incidentally, last time I was around HQ, that particular robot was in one of the lobbies.)
I’m going to answer this as a robot that was a unique architecture for that game. 469’s 2010 robot has already been mentioned. My second example of a unique approach was 254’s 2014 robot. Really cool design.

2826 from 2015. The arm that lifts vertically then transitions to horizontal to lift the can is really cool and not design you typically see in FRC.
One of the GOAT autos!
Two that come to mind for very innovative design are 4907’s 2022 jumping robot and 254’s 2019 robot.
4907’s whole idea of using a vacuum tube to power their jumping climb mechanism was one of the finest examples of thinking around a problem and coming up with an unorthodox solution. The fact that it also worked flawlessly doing something we all though about and discarded as unworkable at the beginning of the season (that is, jumping straight up to the traverse bar) was just brilliant.
Then 254’s 2019 robot was a masterpiece of design, integrating several unusual concepts into one bot. First, the whole idea of putting their entire elevator/arm mechanism on a turret (or a turntable, if you prefer) was an extremely clever solution to the problems of the game. Then using the suction cup climber integrated to the same elevator mechanism took it to a whole other level.
Both excellent examples of what you can do by looking at design solutions that are not the normal or expected paths to success.
FRC 9101’s 2023 bot. Very impressively designed for a specific task and did that task extremely well.
They have more information on their website:
You should check out 2481 the Roboteers. They’re very creative and have lots of interesting and unique designs. Their 2022 robot had a very unique climber, and their 2020 robot had an amazing shooter that could even fire damaged powercell balls very accurately.
Definitely one of the most impressive autons I’ve seen in awhile! Very cool!
A very similar bot to this is 9227’s bot from this year. It’s super cool to see rookie teams make efficient bots like these!
Yes, it is. I’ll be looking out for them this coming season.
47 in 2000
1114 in 2015
1678 in 2014
This year TJ^2’s robot was sick, in terms of mechanisms and the wheels, the fully custom tread specifically
323 in 2017
1986 in 2016 (Tape Measure Climb)
1657 in 2015
16 in 2012
118 in 2008
111 in 2004
Are some of favorites that haven’t already been mentioned
