What CAD software does your team use?

Hi, my team uses Autodesk Inventor and I’d like to know what other teams are using.

Here is a fairly recent poll asking a similar question. Favorite CAD programs?

Interesting, I’ve never heard of Onshape. Would you recommend it over something like Solidworks or Autodesk Inventor?

I would use that if it had free student licenses haha!

You’re in luck, its currently free on epic games (until tomorrow the 12th)

Excellent… time to switch to Kerbal and build a flying robot; we don’t need a shooter or an arm if we can fly!

To be honest… I don’t know how to.

We use Autodesk Inventor with Vault for file management.

Awesome, I’m currently trying to set up a vault server for my team. We currently use a shared drive.

The neat thing about Onshape is that it’s cloud based, so I can work on projects on any computer with access to internet and in some cases offline. You can also do group editing similar to google docs so that’s helpful since FRC thrives on collaboration. The biggest downside is it’s not the greatest for larger projects since it’s web based, so projects with 100+ pieces tend to be a bit laggy (depending on computer rendering capabilities and WiFi connectivity). We only started using it this off-season, but so far we’ve been really happy with it.

(Edit) I’ve never used anything other than onshape, so I have no idea how it compares to any other programs.

Solidworks

My FRC team used Autodesk Fusion 360 for the ease-of-use and cloud collaboration. My Ri3D team at the U of M however uses SolidWorks. Both seem to be popular options and either one is an excellent choice.

No joke, I actually used this to confirm geometries of our robot.

I use onshape, it is pretty similar to Fusion. What i like about onshape though is that the software is all on the cloud, so if you don’t have a pretty good computer you are still able to use onshape.
