This is my first frc season, and I want to know what a team could win by winning the First Championship
A trophy and an automatic slot at Champs for the following season
You forgot the fame/glory, blue banner, and many smiles.
So many smiles <3
Bragging rights.
And from what I understand, topically a generous boost in recruitment for the following year.
There can be much more as well if you leverage the publicity and credibility the title can give. (Think newspaper articles that motivate sponsors and community leaders to help the team)
When my team won back in high school, we also got a lot of recognition from the State Legislature, and local town government. Typically you can ride this out for a few years, until people forget, or the elected officials change over. It is great for sponsorship recruitment as well.
To add on to this:
Getting recognition by local leaders/sponsors/school officials/etc. applies to any awards/achievements at any level of competition. Document all your team successes on and off the field. Your sponsors and school leaders will appreciate seeing what their investment helped accomplish.
This applies to yourself, too. Make note of the things you accomplish. At the end of your season, ask yourself:
- Did I learn a new skill?
- Did I make new friends?
- Did I find a mentor who will help me reach my goals for the future?
- Are my parents proud of me?
- Did I have fun?
The best trophies are NOT made of metal. Regardless of how far your team goes this season, there are plenty of opportunities for you and your team to find victory in your own way.
Good luck this season!
You’re right! The best trophies are made of a nice blue fabric to put up on the wall…
A pat on your back, pretty much…
Fame and fortune, and everything that goes with it.
But it’ll be no bed of roses, no pleasure cruise.
This is perfect and I’ll try to reinforce the importance of these points.
There was a recent CD thread about winning isn’t everything (but it feels so good) and placing well is about as valuable for teams as winning and learning something no matter the robot’s result is key to the good experience. Sponsors like to see lots of students participating and high rankings but most sponsors still largely accept teams as they are.
and I suggest you do this every day or week and not wait to the end of the season when you forget stuff. Keeping a journal is too corny for most students but it can be better than winning the championship and forgetting some of the stuff a student contributed.
I write recommendations for students for jobs and scholarships and they are based on what we remember a student accomplished and that has much more impact than just saying team won. And if a student doesn’t think winning a scholarship is that big of a deal ask parents or see the students’ smiles on a photo I posted in a Weekly Wins.
Little known tidbit, you actually get a personal trip to Dean Kamen’s own North Dumpling Island. Before leaving, you have to option to return a mere human or become an FRC gamepiece and be forever one with fRC. Dozer was a 2322 alumn, but they had to end him cause he was fed up with how they treated him and was gonna talk.
Confetti. So much confetti. I’m talking like taking apart your dryer six years later and finding red and blue rectangular confetti in it.
Lol yeah, a bunch of people on my team stuffed their pockets with the confetti and brought it all the way back to our build site!
Ok, I’m going to share our teams “Legacy Record”.
(I tried to delete sensitive info,-like phone numbers and email- but left the student names since that is part of the public record that we keep)
On my team I keep this record restricted to viewing only and usually give access to a single responsible student each year to update. Most of this information would be totally lost if I hadn’t started keeping it in this format. And because of this, we have an awesome record of our team from the very first year.
This is one of our most prized documents because it shows EVERYTHING. Each sheet (it’s excel) shows our most important team information so we never forget.
The sheets are:
Accomplishments: this is a simple listing of what our team has accomplished each year.
Milestones: This is a list of milestones and awards associated with FRC. My goal is to check off at least one every year. (I don’t care what it is. I want to accomplish something we haven’t before) It gives students an easy to see goals to strive for. And we celebrate each check, especially knowing the more we have the harder a new check will be. (and a bigger accomplishment in getting it)
Event Data: An easy to understand (I hope) list of events we’ve done and how they have affected our season. It’s also a good way to include off-season events that might not have data on Blue Alliance.
Fundraisers/Outreach: What we did. How much we made. Who was in charge or helped coordinate.
HR record: A by the numbers sheet of students to show how we have increased or decreased our membership year to year. Also broken down by gender (because girls in STEAM is one of our team goals) It also shows Dean’s list and Woodie Flowers nominations each year.
Scholarships: shows how our students have accomplished their goals and how they have been helped. (also good to show sponsors that our students are being helped)
Alumni: how to keep track of our alumni after graduation
Charts: taking some of the data and putting it in a visual format
Raw HR data: a roster of students with their grade level and gender each year to use to automatically populate some of the other sheets. (We can also see who didn’t come back each year without having to rely on memory)
Hopefully it will be useful for other teams to use as a template to keep their team memories as a legacy for future generations. It was extremely important to our founding team members that our team was sustainable and that a connection could be made between all the generations of students yet to come.
I always tell my students: “Your accomplishments are not yours alone, everyone who came before you had a hand in making it possible; and you set the stage for everyone after you to accomplish even greater things.”
Bragging rights, glory, a whole lot of fun, and a great boost to fundraising advertising.
Worlds is great and an experience that really is more about the Team and the triumph instead of getting anything material wise. You get a trophy, blue banner, and an invitation to next year’s championship. Enjoy it, it’s about FRC at its best.
Q. What does a team win by winning FRC Tournaments?
A. Millions of dollars of Sponsorship over the Years.
