What is the optimal alliance alliance this year?

What does everyone think the optimal alliance will consist of? What abilities would each alliance member have? Could defense be an effective strategy? Will it be similar to last year because of the similar field setup?

I believe a 2 speaker and 1 amp alliance would be very effective due to the ability to maximize the amplification period scoring. A defensive bot on the other hand would have its perks to make shooting into the speaker more difficult from farther range but also you lose the chance to maximize scoring during the amplification period since you only have 2 robots that can score.

I believe it will be three bots who can do both amp and speaker, and they switch what they are doing depending on whether the speaker is amplified.

I originally thought there may be more room for specialization in this game, but after running some numbers for different alliance makeups (and also after Team Update 1), I’ve changed my mind. Now I think alliances that are best able to take advantage of amplification periods will likely have 3 speaker-capable robots, at least 2 of which can also handle the amp.

I think at champs, playoffs alliances will either be three robots that can do both speaker and amp, or (less likely) two robots that can do speaker and amp and a wall bot. I’m not sure how effective defense will be this year; I’m leaning towards not effective. But, I could see it being effective with the choke point on the source side of the field, the ability of the other alliance to pick up blocked notes.

That would seem to be the case at champs but during quals at regionals or districts then having a robot really good at one thing is better than just mid or good at both.

I think the optimal alliance will consist of two shooter bots and one amp bot. When notes do not need to be scored in the amp, it will deliver notes to one of the shooter bots or shoot into the speaker. For endgame, an optimal alliance will be able to achieve three part harmony, and score in at least one trap.

3 robots which can do both while also being able to play defense. If the amp needs to be progressed, you always want to score in the amp, otherwise you want to score in the boosted speaker. Climbers can also double as shot blockers which will allow an alliance to play defense on the opposing alliance whenever they boost their speaker and I could easily see opportunistic defense on amplified speakers being worth more than just finishing your own cycle because every shot has a way of being defended this year and none of them are particularly easy to play against with equal driver skill.

I can see defense being pretty valuable in this year’s game. At this time I’m predicting that some shut-down level defensive bots (think 747/1817/6443 in 2019) will make deep playoff runs.

I’m getting déjà vu.

I have changed my mind on what the perfect alliance would be. I want to come back to this question in a few weeks.

Unlike last year defense can have an important roll but I haven’t decided if a defending robot can prevent more points than they can score.

Most teams think they are good defenders or know how to correctly play defense but it tends to not be true.

Now that its been a few weeks and we’ve had time to build robots, are there any new opinions on optimal alliance?

I think the optimal alliance is 3 speaker scoring robots and 2-3 amp robots. If you have all 3 robots ready to shoot in the speaker and then amplify, one can go for the fourth piece, and the other two can go for the amp to get another amplification.

Anything new after week 0?

I watched a replay of a match at ISR, may have been the final. Both alliances assigned a defense bot to act as a “goalie” blocking the opponent’s subwoofer. One had some kind of flag contraption up toward the max height to block shots.

Not sure how well the approached worked, but maybe we’ll see this weekend.

Dreams really do come true!
