What should we do with our Limelight 3?

We currently have a Limelight 3 that we save for 2024 but with no 2024 Limelight 3 update from Limelight or Photonvision, what should we do? Should we go and buy a Pi to run Photonvision or play the long game and wait for the software to come out?

You can run PhotonVision on a limelight 3, please check our issues section in GitHub. I imagine an official limelight image would be coming out very soon, ML images for 2024 are already being collected on their website

Photonvision is great and that is a good way to play around “now”.

We are just over a week into the season. I would hardly call this the “long game”. I agree that more communication would be nice, but I absolutely would not want them to rush a release just to get you something that doesn’t work that some teams might never update.

Last year the megapose update (the first real usable image) didn’t come until 1/19. If a week from now rolls around and we have still heard absolutely nothing I will start to get worried.

Limelight already has the capability to track April tags for the 2024 game with the 2023 image. You just have to change the family type and tag size in the “standard” tab and it’s up and running. Here is the tag map I’ve been using on limelight to track the robots field position.

If you go to the limelight docs, the april tag page shows how to update the tracking for 2024 tags:

Its straight forward to use the Hue control to have the limelight find the bright orange note. Use that to set Left/right rotation and go pickup a limelight from the floor in auto. That’s just out of the box limelight capability.
