What stage in build season is your team at?

With 50% of build season over, I was wondering where everyone is at

  • Prototyping
  • Prototyping transitioning to the final build
  • Finishing touches to final build
  • Practicing Runs with the robot

We’re transitioning from bargaining to depression.

Transitioning prototyping to a build, but not the final build.

We are in the “behind” stage of build season. Soon we will be transitioning to the “dread and panic” stage.

We don’t really fit any particular category in the poll. We just need to hook up the pneumatics for the practice bot to start practicing. The chassis and control system of the competition bot are a day or two from being done. Construction of the Hatch mechanism for the competition bot will be started after testing with the practice bot is done. Calulations and major component selection for the Cargo mechanism are done so CAD work can now start. Yes, the girls are having fun

We’re stuck in Week 2. What week is this?

Well we were doing OK. Drive train for Comp and Practice machines done, manipulators tested and near final stage. Now we’ve lost Mon/Tues/Wed to snow and cold weather.

We have many of our parts fabricated, just working on putting it all on the chassis.

We don’t really fit any of those categories.

Chassis has been assembled for early shakedown before being taken apart for a frame cut.

Most if not all of the cargo arm is in the shop and being assembled. Most of the fabrication left is simply opening up some holes with a drill press where our plasma cutting sponsor went undersized. A few smaller tubes need some custom work, but that’s why we stockpile gussets.

Hatch pickup system is behind for a variety of reasons:

  • We’re pushing ourselves to get to a floor pickup
  • Less-seasoned kid leading the design (but she’s asking the right questions)
  • We know we can go back to a basic human-load-only setup with hook tape and two cylinders, which we have on deck.

School canceled yesterday, today, and tomorrow, possibly even more this week have to see. so currently being locked out of our school/shop we are at the winter weather stage.

I’m coaching two full teams…one all female team and one veteran mixed team. My lady’s team is a rookie team and building an Everybot. They’re in process of completing the frame, waiting for belt , then installing the intake mechanism. They’ve already test driven their robot via standard code so we know all the electrics work and don’t smoke on start up. The veteran team is waiting on waterjetted and West Coast chassis parts to be fabricated. The veteran team decided to build an Everybot just in case the parts and build did not finish on time for stop build day as an option B. The upperclassmen are leading the freshmen and sophs on this project until the fabrications arrive later this week. They feel it’s better to be safe than not show up. We used an Everybot last season and ended up in the quarters in the Dallas Regional and the Texas UIL State Championship. We can also use the Everybot as an opponent or test driving mule.

We lost the lady’s coach due to major illness before Christmas. She has not returned. I’m getting to the point of being on my last nerve. I’m glad our mentors have stepped up to guide the rookies and the vets in preplanning subsystems for installation.
Right now, we’re in the Alfred E. Neumann “what me worry” stage. It will either come very together or bomb badly. I’m in the come together category right now.

I’m the mentor of a rookie team. We have the KOP frame finished and are working on wiring. It seems like everytime we make progress we hit a dead end because we are missing a part or a tool that we didn’t know we needed.

I feel your pain. I’m glad I have an understanding and patient spouse. I have purchased way too much stuff (tools and parts) personally this year as we need them “on the fly” and can’t wait for the slug like blob that is our organization’s purchasing process. I don’t see anyway out. We don’t have the right parts or tools either and we’ve been around since 2010. I don’t throw anything away but still need “stuff”.

Same here. My wife even volunteered to come help us on the weekend (she works in education).
I wish there was an easier way to purchase tools.
Making progress though, we will eventually get there. We are lucky to be supported by local industry.

1293’s in much the same boat (I’ve seen parts going back to about 2006 lying around). Part of the game, though we have started internalizing Spectrum’s MCC concepts and design around a few recurring themes (Keystone brackets, Peanut/Walnut, 57 Sports, VersaRoller, VEX and REV gussets) with much greater speed and precision. It is a process, and we still have to place a bunch of orders this year, but it does seem like it’s getting better.
