Hi everyone. My team is looking to use time of flight sensors on our robot this year. I was wondering what other teams plan to use and why that one? We are quite inexperienced with sensors like this and do not know what to look for. Thank you all!
What are you using these sensors for? Detecting the position of a ball internally in the robot?
Yes that is exactly what we plan on using them for. We plan to have one past the intake and the rest throughout our indexing system.
For that purpose, I’d take a look at Photoelectric IR Object Detection sensors. Like these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M1PN0S6/
They are simple digital sensors, with adjustable sensitivity.
We’re note sure if we’re going to use one this year, but we tried out the MaxBotix one that comes in the KOP and found it to be completely useless. We have three of them, we tried them all with the roboRIO and an Ardiuno. With about 50% accuracy we could tell something was in front of the sensor, but at no point could we accurately tell how far away it was.
We had a couple Parallax sensors that we tried out and found to work quite well.
I agree. We have a couple of these on order to try out:
IR Beam Break sensors should also function very well!
I was going to say exactly this. Photoelectic sensors work great for this application.
We ordered a few of these and they are working great so far. Thanks for the suggestion @ExploitSage!
