What to do about mentors that are "overly helpfull"

Have other teams dealt with mentors that crush student ideas, refuse to teach and build the robot during school hours? Some of our other mentors have taken notice and are unsure what to do. What are good strategies to deal with mentors that are like this?

The real solution is to not forget that things happened this year that folks disliked, bring it up in the late spring, have a conversation around expectations with mentors and students, come to consensus, publish your guidelines, and hold each other accountable next year.

Can your head mentor talk to this mentor?

More often than not a conversation can fix it. The mentor may not realize the negative impact they are having.

Post-build season, sit down as a group and have a conversation with the mentor(s). Setting boundaries and informing them of the issue can lead them to understand that there is an issue in the first place. Other interventions may be required from other mentors as well if the ones causing the issue are actually aware of the effects. Just make sure you’re being open, honest, and respectful in that conversation and you should hopefully receive respect as well. Best of luck to you!
