Wheel Type and Traction

I saw that thread floating around about polygon wheels, but this thread isn’t that crazy. All I’m wondering is what traction devices your robots have, your weight, etc.

Reasoning would help too, but I am trying to get an idea of what traction devices are the most popular. Wheel count/width is also important, although disputable.

We have 12 VexPro 3.25" omni wheels. 3 on each side of the robot.

Here is the reasoning: The students wanted to try an omni drive, but we weren’t going to do it unless we could address the issues that have been brought up on chief delphi about why the omni drive was bad for competition.

6 3.5" Colson Performa, 3 per side, center driven live axle with #35 chain. Robot weighs 89.9lbs.

We opted for a six wheel tank drive (3 4" colsons on both side). In order to help center the weight, our gearboxes are set slightly more aft than the center axle. Our center wheel has a 1/16" drop and all the wheels are driven off of dead axles with #25 chain. Our robot’s weight is 119.2#

So our robot has 20’’ wheelbarrow tires, where would that fit in the poll?

I mean I guess we also have two Omni wheels on the front, but I don’t think that counts.

i don’t see tank treads on there. talk about serious traction!!!

My bad, I guess that wins the traction battle pretty handily.

Ummm… 4- other plaction? I’m kinda surprised. I saw a team last year do that, and we referred to them as the steamboat.

This poll does not match up with my observations at events.

It’s a known fact that Chief Delphi is not representative of all FIRET teams. CD consists mainly of teams in the top half of competitiveness, and is greatly lacking in the lower level teams as far as surveys like these are concerned.

As OP, I prob should have shared.

We fit in the “other” plaction material category. We use the other green treads. Not the nitrile ones on AM, but a tough plastic. Not sure where we get it.

Our 6 CIM independant 6WD is set up in a 4+2 config, omni’s in the back (gear side). Not sure why the omni’s couldn’t be dead, but we have had 3 blackouts in 1 competition. Competing this week at Howell, after a gearing change.

I like how our robot drives. Without mecanum, we still have lots of “swerve” room at the lift. Our center of turning is far from the gear side, meaning we almost never need to back up to realign.

I hope next year we use Butterfly or Swerve (I lean towards Butterfly, probably easier to drove).

the only issue with that is we only have 2 of the 20’’ wheels, then two Omni wheels

Could I inquire you to post some picture of that drive train? sounds slick as well as interesting.

Um… why?

because it looks awesome?

We also don’t run our battery dead, we end most of our matches with 85% charge left.

I’m aware. I should’ve emphasized that this is drastically different from my observations, even for a CD poll. I find that to be a bit interesting; what makes wheels so special to the top half of teams? Why such strong aversion to HiGrips?

As an aside, something I found interesting with my own observations was that I noticed more swerves than mecanums this year at the MAR events we competed at, which is… unusual. I didn’t exactly go around looking at every team’s drivetrain, but there were matches with 3+ swerve bots on the field. I’ve never seen this before.

1073 has opted for an 8WD with 4x2 colsons all belt driven. We are using 9mm belts and we have run into issues with stripping the teeth off the belt.

We started using Colsons in 2014 and we love them. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Colson break.

I saw a LOT of mecanum in Denver last week, maybe 10 or more. There was even one that was all Omni wheels.

We are using 4 Vex Mecanum wheels that are 4" in diameter.
According to your survey do they qualify for a high or a low grippy rating?

At last weeks event (PNW week4) we saw a few 8" and one 10" mecanum robot. One even had 2 mecanum and 2 traction wheels. They claim its better at resisting defense than 2 + 2 (omni and traction).

Dave

The wear characteristics of HiGrips are atrocious. A set of 4’’ wheels will be under 3.5’’ after a single reasonably-strenuous event.

Colsons last all year and then some, and are plenty grippy for our purposes.
