When LIDAR is a little too good at finding cubes

For the 2018 season, team 4678, the CyberCavs, implemented autonomous code that uses the Slamtec A2 scanning LIDAR device to locate cubes. When it finds the closest one, it goes to grab it and then reverses the path back to the scale to drop it. As you can see from the video, sometimes this level of automation can be quite entertaining.

We’re hoping other teams will experiment with a scanning LIDAR device. There’s some interesting potential for using LIDAR to find objects and even to help correct field position. We recorded lots of data from the LIDAR in several of our matches. I’ve provided a link to a previous post with those data files, some documentation and some programming code for anyone who’s interested in using LIDAR.

Feel free to post any questions you may have and we’ll do our best to provide answers.
