Next year I plan on attending Wentworth in Boston.Wentworth doesn’t have a FIRST team and I thought what a great school to start a team at.I don’t have any idea where to begin though.Do you start with going to the Dean first or getting a sponsor or just opening the idea up to students and see what they think? If you can help me out here thatd be awesome!

I haven’t finished yet, but I’ve got a strong start on a team at UC Berkeley. Although, I may not be your best resource as I’m operating solely on instinct (I’ve never done this before either), things seem to be falling into place better than I could have ever expected.
So…
If you can’t find anyone better, I’m here. Drop me an email and I’ll try to help you out.
Good luck!

Daniel,
Glad to hear it’s working out. (See idea below…)
Everyone,
Would you be willing to jot down notes along the way and come up with sort of a
‘Dummy’s Guide to Starting a FIRST Team’ - maybe add advice from others
with the same experience - post under ‘White Papers’? Sponsorship, recruiting,
etc.
The ASME Guide has a lot of good information. But first-hand accounts
seem to be what a lot of people are asking for.
I’m going through the same thing, trying to get a local high school
interested and sponsored. So I can add the things that work here.
I know it’s the end of the school year and a lot of you are probably very busy.
So…this could be a group effort. I volunteer to be the ‘Ghost Writer’. If
you, or anyone else wants to get involved, send me an e-mail with their
ideas & experiences. Include your name & team number (optional).
This could also have a section on fundraising ideas, etc.
This could also be put up on a web page - any volunteers for the job of
webmaster out there?

I’m in.
My one worry would be that, as there are infinite methods to approach this problem, the reader may get overwhelmed. We’ll have to organize this document very well.
Perhaps we can get it all out on the floor now in a sort of message board type format, and then compile the methods into a document while eliminating extraneous information and redundancies.
My team can set up a page that could work pretty well. Take a look at the layout at the link below. That page is our Florida live-update page, it allows for the user to submit ‘stories’. What do you think?
Any other ideas out there?
Let’s do this!

Mary Ellen-
On our web page we have a pretty good section on how to start a team. It includes things like what types of companies make good sponsors, who to talk to , what to ask them, budget info, resources info. Perhaps this will help you. Feel free to use anything you want.

I know i posted it up here, somewhere a loooong time ago, but that’s kind of like an idea i had… maybe if you asked the reps from a college who sponsors a team write a general letter, made available to all, that said from the perspective of a college sponsor what the benefits were… that way, any of us tikes heading to college in the fall could go in equipped with a valid reason other then our own word why they should start a FIRST team… you could to the same for the industries and high schools… and have them all downloadalbe and public access on the FIRST website or something… that way anyone looking to start could have direct evidence other than their own team…
just something else to think about…
and a note… (kind of to Mrs. Trax)… i tried email that contact name you gave me from team 246, the one BU sponsors… and they don’t seem to be writing back… so if you or any one else has contact names of people on that team, it would be real helpful…
thanks
colleen

This message will probably illustrate some of the demand that Colleen was talking about.
I need to talk with someone on a team that involves a university. I have ideas on how I want to structure my team, but it helps to use people’s experiences as a resource.
What works? What doesn’t work? How much do the high school students do? How much do the college students do?
I’m not going to copy anyone’s formula. Just learn from it…
Thanks in advance for any help!
