We want to know where all you people build your robots at. Not the building or city, i mean “someone’s garage”, “school workshop”, “back room of our main sponsor’s building”, etc…
also, do you have to share you space with another group/class/department/etc.
Our team wants to know, because we work in the back room of a visteon building, but we have to share it with one of the departments. We want to move to a space of our own, but we need to know what other teams have in order to make a formal proposal.
You don’t have to post a picture or anything, just tell us where you build, please.
Team 294 works at Redondo Union High School’s “auto shop”. It is called that because there used to be an auto shop class there, but it was closed down due to liability issues. Luckily we are still there
We share the auto shop with school maitenance and storage. I think they are moving out, though.
team 108 works at the motorola plant in platation. this year we had our own shop. but there always moving departments all over the place so who knows where will be next year:confused:
We build at “The Site” which is located next to an old Xeorx warehouse and is inside a secured location attached to another business with adequate space to do all of our work.
We have a very large classroom at school that we can use afterschool and on weekends but we cannot leave anything out in it because it is used for a class too. We have a walk-in clost size shop room sith a grinder and drill press and we keep stuff in there. We have another room that is about 12x12 where we keep all our robots and stuff. These two rooms are sub rooms in the big classrom.
We also have a very large fully equipped machine shop available for our use at the local college. 2 CNC mills, a CNC lathe, 6 brirdgeport manual mills, 6 manual lathes, vertical bandsaw, horizontal bandsaw, surface grinder, bench grinders, and chop saws.
157 is from a tech school so we have everything we need in house, wood shop, machine shop, electronics, anything. Really nice to have it right there when you need it.
Truck Town THunder, team 68, Proudlly works in GM’s truck mockup section of GM Truck in Pontiac Michigan. We have a full sized field, as well as a machine shop, and access to all sorts of materials. We work alongside GM employees, and get to see newer cars (04’, 05’, 06’, 07’ ect…) before they come out. I’m liking the H3!!!
We work in a classroom and our wood shop. We have access to a metal band saw, mitre saw, table saw, grinder, 2 drill presses, a broken manual lathe, and nothing else. We are hoping to get GM or a machine Shop to sponsor us next year, we really need access to a CNC Vertical Mill. We have to clean up everyday as our rooms are used by classes.
One of our mentor engineers actually worked at sun microsystems 3 blocks away and they had a machine shop with everything including a CNC, huge punchers, mills, lathes… that was never used, at least everything looked brand new. This was actuallly kinda a consequence, since we had a really good machine shop, we had the habit of fabricating custom parts for everything and we would find out at competition that when those parts break or get stripped you can’t just go get one from small parts. Instead we had to run out to USC at So cal in order to fabricate new parts.
After fabricating all the parts, we would bring it back to our mentors classroom, he had one of those rooms between two classrooms where we could store stuff, and then we assembled everything after school.
Oh yeah, the machine shop was equipped with really nice welding machines and we were able to weld aluminum, which was really hard.

We had been using 1/3 of auto shop that had been unused except by maintenance for years (trucks and storage)
We work in a fairly well equiped 30 by 30 room in our school’s basement from when there used to be a shop class. We have it all to ourselves, so we hardly ever tidy the place, making it pretty difficult to find anything. We have all the machine tools we need there (not CNCs though) and a fridge and coffee machine and even our computers for animation etc. It’s a really convenient arrangement and saves us a lot of time.
Our primary work site is the school Auto Shop. We “inherited” the machines from the old metal shop, so we have a Bridgeport mill, a lathe, drill press, band saw, a MIG welder and a few other things in addition to all the automotive tools that “belong” in the auto shop. Since the shop teacher is our main mechanical guy, basically half the place is full of our stuff.
Occasionally, we also go down to the Visteon office in Troy to use our field. We took over the back room and set up our field for about three months. All the late-night autonomous work was done there. We get some stuff done at the GM Tech Center, too, though we usually don’t go there ourselves. We just send our steel prototypes and drawings down and say “can you make this in aluminum?” So, a lot of the machine work and welding is done there, but all the design, prototyping, and assembly is done at the school.
263 works in 4 of the tech rooms in our high school. most of the building is done in the wood shop, and designing done in our CNT room. general meetings and the clubhouse we keep our robots and everything else are in the electronics room, and most the autocad/cadkey is done in the aviation room
950 worked primarily in a room (approx. 25x15’) with 3 other teams. We had access to a full machine shop (down the hall from said room). It wasn’t all that cramped, but when all the teams needed a drill press or a band saw at once it got kind of annoying.
Team 234 works in our school’s technology department. Sadly, the tech department is closing so it will sorta be like the Cyber Blue wing from that point on(which isn’t that sad really, if you are on the robotics team :D). We have all the basic machinery including a mill and a lathe. With the tech departments closing in our whole township, we could possibly be inheriting more machinery since we are the only people who will use it. Included in the tech department is a computer lab where we do our animation work and the electronics crew work in there too.
