Which bonus RP will be more common?

  • Completed ROCKET

Getting 15 HAB points will happen fairly often by the three-robot method: 6+6+3, with two robots capable of driving/jumping onto level 2.

Completing a ROCKET requires securing six hatches and stowing six cargo (at three levels), with many of those cycles hindered by annoying-bump defense. Significantly fewer robots will be capable of doing those cycles quickly enough. Drop one game piece, and you probably don’t get the ROCKET.

I think it the hardest is going to be 40 kpa, given the lack of fuel on the field and boilers, it seems pretty hard.

Good times, I remember advising a couple teams to ignore the fuel completely. For me it was a boring year to watch. Still can’t believe GDC never tweaked the scoring on that.

Honestly of the scoring options that year Climbing needed the most tweaking. One hang should have not been able to outscore an entire Rotor.

I’m curious, what are people’s thoughts on the same question but if you needed at least 18pts for the HAB RP. That’s one LV3 and two LV1s, so still not as challenging as it could be. What about 21pts?

I think that puts the HAB RP a little too far out there Loose.

At 18 pts having a bot with lvl 3 capability is a near dead set requirement which automatically disadvantages a lot of teams unless they get luck with teammates. Even more so with 21 pts.

At least with 15 you can have a lvl 3 bot, a level 1 and the occasional dead bot. Or you can still have two (not as hard) lvl 2 bots and a drivable lvl 1.

I think a big question mark here is why is there no bonus for a completed rocket in elims?
Other than RP in quals, there’s not as much incentive to prioritize completing a rocket. At least with the HAB, 3 x lvl 3 is still 36pts as opposed to 3 x lvl 1 at 9 pts.

At weeks 1 through 4 I’m thinking that the climb RP will be significantly more common than the rocket RP, but not that much more. It seems like even robots with simple climbs are completely incapable of getting on the platform (throwback to stronghold and power up) and this is going to make getting a level 3 climb that much more important.

By week 5 through champs, the RP is going to even out and will likely be equally as common through to Einstein.

I miss the playoff point system changes

People are severely underestimating the difficulty of the Rocket Ranking Point. I bet you’ll be able to count on one hand how many times it happens at most events. On the other hand I would expect the climb RP to happen relatively regularly… maybe in the range of 15-25% of the time.

It seems that’s the case every year. 4 rotors or 40KPA, defeating the whole tower, getting a triple climb…

The challenge of the rocket ranking point is both the time investment and also how easy it is to interfere with an alliance’s ability to get the ranking point. Even if your robot is capable of getting the ranking point on its own, the rocket isn’t a protected zone and it’s easy for the opposing alliance’s resident BLT to set up shop in front of it and prevent you from getting those last few cycles in. Even with the 20 second defender grace period at the end of the match, it forces most teams to decide whether to go for the climbing ranking point or the rocket ranking point.

Although I think that most alliances will focus on getting their own rocket ranking point during qualifications, any robot that can’t contribute scoring potential due to mechanical issues or otherwise can still impact the match outcome significantly more so than they were able to in 2018.

Unless your alliance has two robots or more collaborating capable of blitzing through the rocket before defenders can interfere, the rocket ranking point will be pretty uncommon.

There was talk of getting the Rocket done during Sandstorm. I currently dont see how that is possible.

I don’t believe that’s at all possible given that an alliance can score a maximum of 5 hatches in sandstorm.

5/6 is pretty dang good in my book. Even if it temporarily takes all 3 bots to push the defender and get the last hatch, it would be worth the rank point. (assuming you have a good cargo scorer)

Though I didn’t see that Aaron said “done”

How are you seeing more than 3? Pre-placed hatches go on the cargo ship and don’t score. They also can’t be removed.

A Hatch Panel starts in each Loading Station at the beginning of the Sandstorm Period.

And each robot can start with 1.

Theoretically you could have 11 hatch covers placed by the end of the sandstorm, but 6 of them won’t score because they’re Null, so that’s 10 points you don’t get. If you’re willing to take a penalty you could get more, but as that penalty is a tech foul (good for 3.5 hatches for your opponents) I don’t think that’s a wise idea.

I’m not understanding. Null hatches means the pre-placed hatches on the cargo station by human players. But you said 6 null hatches. Isn’t it 2 null pieces (cargo or hatch) per alliance? Or is it per team? FIRST wouldn’t make it that easy would they?
