okay this is a rookie question…

who can we buy stuff from!!! it said in the manual that we can ONLY use stuff from the ABOVE sources…

the above sources are, everything in the kit, anything from small parts, and stuff on the additional parts list.

if that is the case, who can we purchase stuff from? just small parts? what about mcmaster? what are we allowed to buy from home depot?

also, can we make our own wheels this year? and if so, out of what ?

we filtered through the manual and it was confuzzling us…

Here’s the rules as I understand them:

You are allowed to purchase ANY items from small parts. However, you may only purchase up to $1200 catalog value from Small Parts for parts that go on your robot. You DO NOT need to account for other small parts purchases in the $1200 budget that are not used on your robot OR parts that are listed on the additional hardware list. You are allowed to purchase an unlimited amount of items (unless listed otherwise) on the additional hardware list from ANY vendor. You do not need to account for any items on the additional hardware list.

: also, can we make our own wheels this year? and if so, out of what ?

You are allowed to use / make wheels from materials sold from Small Parts or materials that are on the additional hardware list.

Patrick, you may have a rookie team number but you
seem to have this part of the rules knocked as far as
I understand them anyway.

Well said.

It was also well explained at the Rookie workshop

I may be on a rookie team, but appearances can be deceiving (3rd year).

Yes, you may make your own wheel, with things out of the kit, additional hardware, and SPI. For example, you can take the bearings out of the kit and aluminum plates and bars to make your own set of wheels that’s almost totally hollow with a strong external structure, then you are going to have a really nice, fast, strong and light drive train on your robot. Or you can make the wheels completely solid ones to add weight to your robot as you see fit.

Of course you will have to consider about the time you are willing to put into this as well as resources. I know a lot of teams just use those wheel chair wheels, but any teams out there have any advice of making your own wheel?

Anything (except packing materials) from the kit can be used on the robot. You can purchase and use just about anything from Small Parts, up to a $1200 limit of parts on the robot (you can’t use their pneumatics fittings and I don’t think FIRST would appreciate you appropriating electric motors from the various tools Small Parts sells). The stuff on the Addtional Hardware List can be purchased from anywhere but they may have to be certain types or to certain specs, so it may be easiest to buy them from the manufacturer. Basically, if you can find something on the Additional Hardware list at Home Depot or in the McMaster Carr catalog you can buy it from them. If it’s not on the additonal hardware list, you can’t use it. You can make about any mechanical component you want (wheels, structure, gears, you name it more or less). So yes, you can make your own wheels.
