Who is the Breakaway Animator?

Hi Chiefdelphi and the FIRST community,

I am one of the documentary film crew that has been documenting Team 3132’s journey as the first FIRST Australian FRC team. This one hour documentary is intended to promote FIRST, and currently we are planning to have it shown on US and Australian TV.

Our film crew is looking for the animator who created the Breakaway animation as we are using some clips from it. This is because we would like it’s resolution to match our footage as the web clip we are using is about a quarter of our resolution and therefore looks out of place.

If you are the animator or know who they are could you let me know?

Thank you,

I take it you have tried the largest video available on NASA’s site (640x480 dpi)?

There is a fair chance that the animation was made by a team of people at FIRST. I’m not sure of who specifically coordinates that, but there is also a fair chance that he/she is not on CD often (or at all). Try contacting first here. They have a phone number you can try for a more immediate answer.

Edit: I feel silly. How could I forget about Dave Lavery?

Talk to this gentleman: Dave Lavery](http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/member.php?u=171)

Dave Lavery.

Edit: Beaten to it by like a minute.

Thanks, yeah I have emailed (possibly to an expired email address) and private messaged Dave Lavery about 3 days ago but I haven’t heard a reply and the private message appears to be unread.

So is he definitely the animator as on the forums it kinda was hinted at?

Tanis, we are currently using the 640x480 one but that can not match our 1440x1080 (16:9 aspect ratio, aka 1080i), also it is heavily compressed as it was design for web streaming and is unfortunately not up to standards for TV or cinema viewing. Thanks I will try contacting FIRST and see if they can get me in contact with the animator.

Dave Lavery would be your contact. He’s a fairly busy person, so keep that in mind.

Especially this time of year!

Thank you I assume he probably is. He possibly might even be working on the 2011 FRC Animation

If he gives you any hints or says anything random let us know!

Nah, I’m pretty sure you’re off by a couple of years. Bill says they’ve got the game mostly figured out, but I’m pretty sure he means the 2014 game. The animation Dave is working on right about now is for 2013. No sense procrastinating now, is there?:wink:

Totally

PS he said it involves robots, teams and is some sort of competition, he kept on mentioning first or fast or something

Haha, normal Dave.

Don’t worry about that, he talks about those every year. Clearly a decoy.
On a more serious note, he is a very busy guy (between his FRC work and, you know, his day job at NASA).

Thanks everyone,

FIRST has gotten me in contact with Dave and we are discussing it now.

Juicy Dave gossip: he is very busy as expected.

K cheers, will possibly see some of you at a future FRC competition but hopefully all of you at some point will see this documentary.

You WILL tell us when it’s ready, right?

Haha I will try my best to remember, but I’m guessing FIRST might send out a release about it. We are at least two months away from finishing it, basically we are waiting to hear a YES back from a TV station then we just need to color grade it and do a better sound mix, both which we might need to pay other companies to do though I would like to do most of that myself.

Hi CD,

We have just gone public with a trailer, see http://vimeo.com/channels/iwombot). I hope you guys enjoy this taste of our 48 minute documentary! We still have a while before we are completely finished but expect it to arrive in some form during 2011.

Thank you,
Glen
