Who needs a tachometer when you have perfect pitch

I’ve taught students to listen for when they’re pushing a drill or saw too hard. Sh was definitely pushing a drill too hard. He asked how I knew and how he could tell. Fortunately, I knew he was in the school’s band, and I told him that the pitch of the drill motor had dropped more than an octave, and it should definitely be less. Problem solved! He must have passed it on, because even four years after he graduated, this was rarely a problem on the team.
