In the initial setup, alliance robots can be placed in either of the two starting alleys. I can imagine strategies where the opposing robot on the same side of the field as me could make a difference. For example, A and B are on alliance, C and D the other. A wants his robot on the same side as C BUT C wants his robot on the same side as B. Who chooses?
I believe it’s all relative to player station placement…
I’m not sure if this is in the rules or not. That would be a good place to start, then I’d search and ask on the FIRST forums before asking here.

In the field diagram it shows that the alliance robots could be on either side. I just found an answer posted today in the forum, while not in the rules, the reply states that the side will be assigned. - Note that enough warning needs to be given to allow for choice of autonomous program selection.
