Why did gear on drivetrain motor break?

We were practicing driving and one of the gears on our drivetrain literally snapped in half when the driver turned hard. We use an arcade drive system from the DifferentialDrive class. I theorize that maybe there was too much torque on the motor as we were going full speed and we had default ramping for the Falcon 500s. I’ve already added ramping but want to know if there’s anything else I should do so this won’t happen again.

Can you post a pic of the failed part?

What type of gear are we talking about? A pinion gear on the motor shaft, or a larger gear on a hex shaft/round shaft? Aluminum or steel? How big?

For example, there’s a huge difference in the amount of material between an 8-tooth and 14-tooth falcon pinion gears. I would be really surprised to see a 14 tooth pinion crack, but not nearly as surprised to see an 8 tooth pinion crack, given how thin the walls get.

Are your drive train motor controllers set up for Coast, or Brake? The latter is harder on the powertrain.
