That looks like a durasoft wheel similar to this on your shooter. How did you mount that to what appears to be a hex shaft?
We turned down some round stock to make a custom hub. This is press fit into the wheel, and broached .500" hex for the shaft.
The 2 larger discs you see on either side of the wheel are steel flywheels to increase the inertia of the system.
What drove the decision to switch to a custom drive gearbox instead of the VexPro ball shifter? Was it more of a weight or performance concern?
Because you could is also a valid reason, I’m just curious.
From digging into their CAD, it seems they’re actually running the two-speed shifter from West Coast Products.
Yeah, they’re just cots WCP DS gearboxes. Packaging and weight mostly.
We had some durability/gear crashing issues with them, but ultimately made it through the season. I’m not sure if that’s a gearbox issue, addendum modified pinion issue, or a careless assembly issue, but we were 6 for 6 on the first stage gear failing.
Not being able to put the encoder into the gearbox was certainly different, but I think we came up with a clean solution.
Why switch from ball to dog shifter though?
