Is there anyway to make a simple winch this year
using any motor besides van dor and cim
Yes there are motors that you can use for the winch in the kit of parts, you can use the globe motor or window motor or even fisher price motor with the gearbox. It really depends on how much weight are you pulling up with the winch. good luck…

any details would be appreciated
I’ll give an example, although I don’t have pics (well, there may be some in the galleries on www.d5robotics.com if you’re lucky).
Last year, 1293 built this winch of an arm to handle the 2X ball. Overall, the design was…lacking. But the method seemed sound–we used a van door motor with a drum attached to it to winch this cable with green plastic coating on it (someone who knows, feel free to add the details) that went over a pulley and moved our arm up and down.
The van door motor still would do the job today…if we had the arm attached, that is.
They don’t seem to be in the kit this year, but last year, we used the Fisher Price gearbox couplers directly as a winch. i thought that in the past they gave a components to make one out of FP motors however, does anyone know where to get the components this year
Last year my team fasioned a winch out of 2 window motors attached together. We put those little black plastic fittings on the motor shafts and used a 4 in. section of aluminum pipe fitted over them to attach the two motor shafts together. It was basically a simple spool, but capable of lifting our robot easily. I’m guessing your making a telescoping arm?
Check out the winch arm we had on 662’s robot last year! The entire arm was powered by the winch, and once the hook as on, we just winched ourselves up off the ground, match, after match, after match… We got those hang points almost every single match.

i’d use two window motors. take the plastic fittings for them and mill off the part that connects to the shaft. then, just bolt the big plastic flanges to your winch and it should work pretty well, without even needing a shaft.
last year and this year we are using 2 FP motors coupled together for our winch. It made for a pretty long winch off the groud last year, but this year we increased our spool size and it works nice and quick for what we use it for.
We put a keyed shaft right through the 2 motors, which were positioned opposite of each other, and then put a spool in the middle. A key point was to put some hose clamps over the end hexagonal shapes of the gear box, becuase that plastic has a tendency not to hold up.
Somehow, this looks veery familliar… (Pic 5/20)

Anyway, I had a few ideas last year (after competition ) and they all involved 2 motors. I think that’s one thing you want to highly consider in your design.
