We have joked about “if only they would invent wireless electricity,” but appears Intel might be on the brink of actually doing it. How would this revolutionize our world? How would this change FIRST?
100 years ago, Tesla showed many ways to wirelessly send power through coupled resonant systems (ie… tesla coils and magnifiers). The problem was always the inefficiencies involved. Space is very large, so to send large amounts/intensities of electromagnetic radiation to be used miles away is just ridiculous.
However, last summer I heard about an MIT group researching wireless power transmission for low current appliances such as cell phones and such. The distances involved would be feet or yards and currents in the order of 10-100mA. Now that will be an idea coming sooner than later. Here’s that article…
I must agree with "rtfgnow’, large amounts of power to run computers and monitors will be a long way off, or just not practical. That is until those systems can run off of less than an amp?
I intend to still be around in 2050, and I agree this is an idea that is going to take a significant amount more research to make it commercially available. The idea was to get an interesting conversation going.
Thanks for the thread on Witricity, I hadn’t seen that before. I wonder how what intel is doing differs from it.
