World's Opt out?

How many teams are opting out of going to World’s even if you qualify?

I track this here: https://frc.divisions.co/qualification#unregistered

Note this includes teams that have recently qualified and still have a chance to register

I don’t know, but I’m familiar with several teams (my own included) who entered the season confident their school district wouldn’t allow the field trip–and then, between improving conditions and their team punching a ticket the hard way, seeing that field trip get approved.

So I expect the number to be much lower than first feared.

I would expect at least a few Turkish teams drop out this week. See Turkish teams unable to get US visas for World Championship.

This was our situation. We didn’t expect to get permission to go, but that changed with the parents of our seniors taking their students the to the school board and pleading their case. Also because of the scheduling quirk with NEDCMP and the Championship we knew we got in mathematically after week 3 even though the NE pre-qualifiers have not been officially listed.

I know several teams in NE did 3-4 districts expecting not to be able to go to the Championship. I don’t know how many of them could now go but burned through their budget so would have to decline because I think their are a few of those as well.

Our team made that call at the beginning of the season. Having MSC lead almost directly into Worlds means almost 2 weeks of students out of school. Add to that the logistics of getting the team and everything from Saginaw to home and then to Houston in 3 days is too much.

WiredCats will not go to Worlds if we qualify.

I have a feeling that a number of Canadian teams could say no - I know that we would. We aren’t even allowed overnight trips and thus have to bus >1 hour each way every day for district champs. An international trip with flights would be out of the question.

The logistics of Michigan to Houston are ridiculous. As a team that has historically not performed, we didn’t even start thinking that this was a decision we’d have to make until we won Milford.

I suspect we have spent upwards of 100 hours trying to organize a “maybe-if-we-qualify” trip to Houston, muttering “should have been in Detroit” the whole way. I envy your courage in the face of puppy-eyed seniors.

Triple Helix won three district events, and the CHS district championship. We will not be attending Worlds in Texas. At our debrief meeting tomorrow we’ll be discussing our options for attending off-season events. There is already talk about applying for IRI.

Our team made that tough choice as well. In addition to the cost and the logistics we have 3 mentors who are unavailable that week. The cost alone was really reason enough, we could almost fund three seasons for the price of a week trip to Worlds.

6329 currently sits in 8th in New England and we have decided not to attend Worlds in Texas. Cost and logistics were just too much for us to make it work this year.

Todd…We’ve decided to do the same thing…even maybe doing IRI if we can get in. Maybe Rumble, IROC , WVROX or THOR
